#3. Broken front sway link, more - from Matt Henson

Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2001 15:55:25 -0800 (PST) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: Broken front sway link, more Well the second autocross of the season turned out to be eventful for us. First, after the car sat with the key in the on position (engine off) for 20 mins the battery died. I'm thinking that mine must still be the origional from 3/94. Not a bad service life.. A buddy was telling me about a company that makes gel cells in popular sizes for reasonable prices (less that Optima). I'll check those out and report back ig I find anything interesting. Anyway, I'm running with Bilts but stock springs/bars. It felt like I was picking up the inside rear wheel.. I had a really hard time putting down the power.. Anyway, long story short, one of the Front drop links was busted. These are the homemade ones from UUC's web site. I needed a longer than stock links to clear one of the turbo pipes. AA sent a really crappy link extender that came loose with every autocross. So I figured that the UUC receipe would be better. The aluminum shifter tube actually pulled off of the end piece. Yes, it was in there very far - pretty much all the way, I believe. I had some trouble with the steel end piece binding with the aluminum so maybe that's a hint. Anyway, I just wanted to send a data point on this, not basking UUC or anythign. They didn't sell me the links and the instructions are free so I guess I got what I paid for. I think I'll go with a steel replacement.. -Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

#5. Factory Alarm problem - from Roman

Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2001 17:02:38 -0800 From: Roman <roman@arteuro.com> Subject: Factory Alarm problem Hi All, Last week I purchased of eBay a NEW factory alarm system for my 96 M3. Today I installed it and went through the steps to set up the remotes. This is the "Factory Pre-wired 1997 MY 3-series". I figured that since my late 96 M3 is pre-wired for an alarm, then this 97 alarm would work (P/N 82 11 1 469 444). All connectors fit fine. Problems: 1. Alarm will not arm and lock the doors. 2. Siren hums(can only hear the hum when the hood is open and ear is to it) 3. The unlock and disarm function is in reverse when using remote. It does unlock the doors when the second button is depressed for a second time. The panic function also works(after holding button down for 2 seconds) but there is no siren. The turn signal lights flash in panic mode. Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks, Roman S. 96 ///M3

The P/N for the ring is: Front Spring Strut Tower Reinforcement 31 31 248 9795 You'll also need the gasket: 31 33 109 4288. These will set you back about $20.00 for two sets. Too bad I didn't know about this earlier. Such a cheap insert may have prevented what will probably be a very expensive repair. When I replaced the clutch on an M1, the pressure plate and flywheel had a very odd look to them -- a little bit like yours, but I would describe it like "someone sprayed it with large droplets of acid, and then wiped it off quickly." The srface was still smooth, but with teardrop-shaped dark discolorations. It looked really odd ... Centerforce re-surfaced the flywheel, totally changed out the friction material on the two discs (it's a two-disc-setup -- various different materials and layouts were used), and I re-installed them with new center and pressure plates. Admittedly it's a twin-disc setup, but they said it was good for 400+ hp. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

I removed the passenger side and would usually pull the threshold piece up without the clip. I think there are 6 or 7 clips. At least they didn't break off inside the door sill, but the clips are a b*tch to pry out of the sill with a pair of screw drivers (my method). Bob Dorchester 95 M3 > Jim Powell wrote:.......
