#1. Fan Removal Tool Question - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 13:33:05 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Fan Removal Tool Question Does anyone know what options there are to properly remove the 32mm fan nut on an E36M3? I know Stahlwille makes a slim 32mm wrench and Snap-On has their Open End Low-Torque Slimline Wrench in 32-36 mm (part number LTAM3236). Has anyone used the Snap-On for this task? Thanks in advance. Regards, Rich

I now have every socket that "I" should need for a BMW old or new. The 5, 6 and 7 sockets look like a piece of allen key in a socket (in fact they are replaceable when you round them off :) and are used for brakes and such. The 10, 14, 17 are a single piece socket in the mentioned sizes and are used for diffs and transmissions. HTH. Go to a bicycle shop and get a headset wrench. They are thin enough to fit to the tight space, cheap, and readily available. No need for a fancy wrench, given how often you remove the fan. John

I stock them in 8mm, 10mm, 14mm and 17mm. I use the 8mm ones for M10 allen head bolts, the 10mm ones for M12 allen head bolts and early (before 1988) BMW differential drain plugs, the 14mm for all current (and replacement) BMW diff plugs and 17mm for early BMW/Porsche/VW/etc trans drain plugs. The E36 trans drain plugs require a 17mm box wrench. Steve

I ended up ordering a regular allen key from McMaster-Carr, <www.mcmaster.com> and bought the nutsert installation tools for the x-brace thats been cluttering up my garage at the same time... I am particularly looking at the stongard. full kit to cover more of the car and was wondering if anyone has experience with installing it themselves. I have priced out install with a rate of 75/hr and approx 4 hrs to install the kit which costs 270ish after discount. don't mind spending it if I have to, but it would seem that this is not rocket science. While this certainly doesn't excuse their lack of response, it may help to explain it. Apparently they also had some voice mail problems. On the plus side TC's shop really knows what it's doing from a technical point of view, and are usually very supportive. Let's hope they get their customer service act together again, and soon. Neil 96 M3 >> I completly agree with Neil's views on this issue. What's so frustrating is that over and over I have heard the same thoughts from many others. T.C is an incredible resource and we should all support him with our business. BUT, it's difficult to give him your business if you wonder if you'll ever get the product you are ordering. I suspect the strength and future growth of the BMW CCA Club Racing program is tied to the support and business growth of TC Kline. Let's all support him AND let him know when we need him.
