#2. getting to the RSMs trunk side - from Mdriver13@aol.com

Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 18:33:46 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: getting to the RSMs trunk side Group, What's the easiest way to get to the rear shock mount bushings (I have the JT Design mounts)? I'm thinking about cutting a small circle out (not quite all the way around), so that it's like a flap. Then, I can pull it up and change out the normal bushings for the track bushings on autox days easily. And also install those reinforcement pieces, as well. Any suggestions???? BUT, > it's difficult to give him your business if you wonder if you'll ever get the > product you are ordering. > > Ken Brinkman Just my opinion, but...here...goes...Everyone seems to think that TC Kline is just another parts guy, and that this is his primary business. Oh, and that Brian M. (the guy who fabricates the roll bars and cages, not the Brian that left TC) is a big steel fabrication shop ready to crank out stuff at the drop of a hat. Quite the contrary. TC is a race shop, who based on my dealings with him (which pre-dates ProParts by years) caters to the committed racers (not drivers school attendees) who wants SUPERIOR products/services for racing, based on TC's racing experience. CHEAP is not what he offers, but unfortunately, just like Will Turner, he is bombarded by people who call, pick his (or whoever answers the phone's) brain and then hang up and shop around the recommendation for the lowest price (usually found at some mail order shop). His target market is more likely to be the guy who sends his/her car down to TC's shop and installs a new/blueprinted motor, JRZ or other advanced shocks, a custom roll cage, fire system, etc., etc. These CORE customers spend at LEAST five figures, and for that get EXCELLENT service. I know of at least two instances where TC personally delivered the car, and then spent two days at Road America (happened to be a drivers school) making sure that the suspension was set up correctly for the owner. He ignored all of those who kept coming up to him for advice (I'm sure they were pissed at him, and still hold grudges), but rather gave AMAZING service to his customer. As for the roll cages, Brian's shop (not the Brian that recently quit) is a TINY little den in the basement of a building, filled to the brim with cars awaiting roll cages. There is only one guy to do all of the work! For my cage, I specified a date several months in advance for the installation, and made sure he had all the pictures of how I wanted the door bars to go. At that time (1997), he only had a jig made for the rollbars, not for the full cages. But it still took him about a week to do one car! (a jig would make it much faster, but not custom) Anyway, when dealing with a true race shop (PTG doesn't seem to answer the phone for less than $20k), remember that most of us may not be a customer they want, and therefore, customer service may be poor. But that doesn't mean that they don't give great service to their core customers. Dan My flame suit is on (actually 3 layer Nomex, SA rated helmet and Turner-installed fire system)

Let's all support >him AND let him know when we need him. Yeah, it's great that we have people like TC and Will Turner running their race teams and also offering their services to all of us. These are real grass-roots BMW guys done well! A friend just crewed for TC over the weekend and was really impressed with their operation. Having said that, there are alternatives if TC is booked solid. Go to the nearest SCCA road races and ask the drivers who builds their cages - ask as many as you can. Check out their cars to see if they're done right. If they've crashed a few times and lived to tell about it, all the better <g>. There always seems to be a local guy who's an ace fabricator, but doesn't have a nation-wide business (and doesn't want it), who can put a nicely made cage in anything. -- Ron Katona

Just as another point of reference - in case you need northern Chicago and not north of Chicago - I have used Nortown Automotive (on North Avenue) with good results. They took some good care of my wheels - even cleaning up the wheel after removing one of those unsightly visible weights that you still find on the outside of some rims. Good luck. The E36 M3 has a movable bracket that allows it to fit a few different size batteries, length wise. The following post which was sent quite a while ago should clarify some of this: Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 16:57:24 -0400 From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> Subject: [E36M3] BMW E36 Battery shopping tips BATTERY GROUP 92 aka "48 1/2" ______________________________ The E36 BMW battery is a special group just for BMW... it is a BCI GROUP Number 92, 12 V 650 CCA, 75 Ah 340A DIN, 130RC. It is BMW P/N 61-21-8-353-651, dealer list about $125. Douglas technicians in Winston-Salem, NC (home of Douglas Battery) affectionately call it a 48 1/2 group battery. Why? Well... A Douglas 49 battery will not fit a M3. A Douglas Group 48 will, but it is smaller.. 625 CCA at zero degrees (800 CCA at 32). An Exide Group 49 has been reported to fit barely...Nascar Select P/N 49-84N 750 CCA. The Exide is about $80 at K-Mart. If it makes you feel any better, I DROVE to Winston-Salem, NC where Douglas is and bought a Group 92 (aka 48 1/2) from their factory store (a blemish) for $80. This was my BEST deal I could get on a Douglas of the right size. I got a small added feature over the BWM one--a "green eye" for the electrolyte condition...I was told they were returns from BMW-Greenville,SC 'cause they were slightly taller than stock and wouldn't fit the Z3. Oops! They had a lot of 'em. They do fit the M3, with a little less room to turn a clamp wrench. And you might wonder, how did I jump from 90 range numbers to 40 range numbers? Well, a 48 interchanges with a 91, and 49 interchanges with 93. A Douglas 48/91 is 11 x 6 7/8" x 6 7/8". A 49/93 is 15 x 6 7/8" x 6 7/8"...again too big for the M3, but an Exide 49 reportedly is not 15" long. FYI, the stock BMW battery dimensions are 7" W x 12 1/4" L at the very base lip, and 6 1/2" x 11 3/4" width/length overall. It is 7" high, but a slightly higher battery will fit (as well as slightly longer, but not 15" worth!) Move to the left for a smaller battery and to the right for a larger. With the bracket you must have a battery that was designed to be used in a BMW and that fits the space the screw holes allow. In this case, the group 48 Diehard is a perfect fit for the left most screw hole. The fit is perfect (as far as I can tell) and the battery is much lighter. Do I think it is a good alternative, yep.
