The one I got was one shade short of the darkes (2nd darkest). So that would make it around ~55%? I have checked the DMV site, it's not terribly clear on the laws involved. It said "Tinted safety glass may be installed in a vehicle if (1) the glass complies with motor vehicle safety standards of the United States Department of Transportation for safety glazing materials, and (2) the glass is installed in a location permitted by those standards for the particular type of glass used." Huh? I guess I've accepted the risks involved (in getting a ticket, like now) when I had those tints installed. I just was seeking an easier way out of this short of removing the tint from the windows. So thanks to those of you that are humouring my cause. :-) I will definitely try & find an optometrist that's willing to furnish me some sort of letter. Also, a friend of mine suggested that I borrow a similarly looking car without tints & just swap plates, get it signed off & beat the ticket this way. Undoubtedly interesting idea... Anyhow... It's no longer a fix-it ticket so removing it won't help (except to prevent further ticketing). Besides, I'd be more afraid of the risks with swapping plates from car to car... I'd imagine that's a pretty big no-no. I do like the idea of a doctor's note though... he'd probably get into more trouble than you for that one. ;-) Jonathan "no more window tint-related posts from me" Lawson >From: Phil <estorilphil@yahoo.com> > >I will definitely try & find an optometrist that's >willing to furnish me some sort of letter. The one I got was one shade short of > the darkes (2nd darkest). So that would make it > around ~55%? I doubt you got 55%. I'm surprised you don't know what it is. 55% looks almost like nothing. 70% (legal in NY) is absolutely like nothing. You probably had a choice between limo tint, 30%, 55%, and 70% (guessing). The fact that the rest of the windows are tinted from the factory doesn't help since there is less available light inside so it makes the fronts look darker as well. Also, what color is the interior? Black? You're toast! > I will definitely try & find an optometrist that's > willing to furnish me some sort of letter. And undoubtedly very illegal. You're liable to get into real trouble if caught, no? Worth it? Probably not. How long have you had the tint before getting this ticket? If you've had a good stretch of luck and still want the tint, pay the fine, think of it as a fee for having it, and be done with it and play your odds again. #6. trade in valude of my '97 M3 - from George M. Kofman

Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 14:50:30 -0600 From: "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: trade in valude of my '97 M3 Okay, so today is a nice sunny day in Milwaukee WI. We've had crappy Seattle-style weather all winter long, and today it's almost 40F and sunny. So what does one do ? Test drive a Boxster S, of course ! I will not bore you with the details, other than the blind spot with teh top-up is way too much for me. So the guy runs my car through his "appraisal." '97 M3 sedan, 5 options, black/black, 55,900 miles. I get back a whopping $19,000 trade-in price. She shows me the book - 17.5K for rough, 24.5K for "extra clean." I figure there is still a few dollars on the table, but ..... FWIW, I think I like my M3 better than the Boster S. The 996 Carrera may be another story. GMK '97 M3 (for now)

Hi Folks - I've got my underdash mostly disassembled out in the garage but I cannot find the *&^^&% connector for the lit shifter knob "tap in extension" wire. I did see a web page on this a few weeks ago that explained where the wire is - cannot locate the page (or wire) now. I've got the headlight switch out, but still cannot locate the appropriate connector. I have the correct part, which daisy-chains into some part of the lighting circuit, but I cannot find the place it attaches!!!! Anyone know where this thing is? I'm in digest, so please reply/copy directly. I've got a date in a few hours, so the car need to be back together! Much thanks - Chris Brown ------------- http://www.ChristianBrown.com

#9. Amero-oil cooler ? (was Euro Oil Cooler) - from Scott Chan

Date: Fri, 09 Mar 2001 14:17:45 -0800 From: Scott Chan <scottch@juniper.net> Subject: Amero-oil cooler ? (was Euro Oil Cooler) Okay, it seems like a modified Euro canister is mandatory. But can we avoid the bracket fab and running lines thru the alternator air vent if we use more widely available and race-proven stuff like a Mocal or Tru-Cool cooler with the stick-thru-the-radiator-quick-clips and Aeroquip or Earls hoses? I don't care if it doesn't "look factory", since I've already thrown away the factory wheels, tires, interior, seats, etc. It's just gotta work reliably and go in with less hassle. -- Scott
