#1. Re: [E36M3] Front tires rubbing strut housing - from Matt Henson

Many people use BMW's crash bolts to increase camber for AStock AutoX cars. The problem is that this also decreases the clearence between the tire and strut. But.. you can use the bolt to decrease camber and increase the clearence. Then you just need to get the camber back. Potential solutions include camber plates ($$), adding shims to the bottom of the steering knuckle (which decreases the clearence a bit but the result will still have more than when you started) and switching the strut hats (probably the best option for the '96+ cars). IIRC there are some cool tricks for the '95 cars too (use '96 hats swapped). Anyway, the point is that there are other options that don't involve spacers or using different wheels. Plus the crash bolts give you variable clearence spacing. Just make sure that you crank those suckers down or they might slip during hard cornering. They won't slip as much as they would if used for increasing negative camber since the bottom of the outside wheel will tend to be forced inward. How much clearence can you get? I dunno.. I think that Steve Hudson said he got around one degree of additional negative camber with the bolts. Given that overall diameter of the tire is around 25in, sin(1d)*12.5=.2in. About 5mm. It might be enough for some people. Any thoughts? -Matt --- David Hogg <springwood@blazenet.net> wrote: > Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 17:05:09 -0800 > From: "David Hogg" <springwood@blazenet.net> > Subject: Front tires rubbing strut housing > > Thanks to all who offered help. Well, I have a set of front struts from a 95 M3 for sale. One strut is definately shot (absolutely NO rebound), and the other is so-so. But the housings are in good condition (just dirty), perfect for those wanting to install Koni struts and not wanting to modify their original units. I'm looking for $50 for both plus shipping. Nick

You probably want to fill to the high mark if you autox or track your car for the added protection. Sure, go ahead, fill to the line. Some people even overfill with 8 quarts. Also, how did you measure the oil level. Was the oil hot or cold? Did you measure just after shutting down the engine? If so, a lot of oil is still coated on many different surfaces giving you a slightly lower reading. Anyone have any specifics on this TSB and how to approach with dealer? Thanks in advance, Jonathan Lukens jlukens@new.rr.com

#10. First autocross with the new suspension - from Bora Akyol
Top
Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 13:56:12 -0800 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: First autocross with the new suspension Today was my first autocross with the new suspension. I had the privilege of having Terry Zaccone ride with me on my first run. Terry is a very experienced autocrosser and champion. He told me that the car handled wonderfully and that I was making a couple mistakes but overall I had the car lined up properly on the course. My two mistakes were too harsh transitioning from brake pedal to gas and carrying too much speed through some U-shaped turns causing the car to push way hard. So on my second run, I followed his advice and dropped 0.3 seconds off my time. Overall, the Dinan Stage III (set up per Dinan recommendations) seems to be pretty good on the autocross course. The car still plows a little if you carry too much speed but I think that is due to the street tires that I am using. I managed to beat all of the Acura NSXs as well as a couple other cars that were on R-compound tires, so I am happy. I think I will end second in my class this time. I am not going to change the suspension at all until I get a couple more autocrosses with it and I get used to it. I have a few questions about the Koni adjustments: 1) What are the effects of stiffening the rebound in the front in terms of handling? 2) What are the effects of stiffening the rear rebound? I know the first order effect of understeer etc, but I figure stiffer fronts also maintain better tire contact as well. I am primarily interested in second and third order effects. Thanks Bora
