The fix is a stiffener that you glue and rivet underneath the 'hump' in the dash above the vent. I just ordered the stiffener from my $tealer, so I just happened to have the pdf handy. If anybody else is having this problem and wants a copy of the TSB, just email me. Most track rats fill 1 quart over the top line on the dipstick, some go even more. Neil 96 M3

#3. Fuel Filter Replacement and Power Steering Questions - from Preston Carey

Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 18:03:19 -0500 From: "Preston Carey" <pcarey@babson.edu> Subject: Fuel Filter Replacement and Power Steering Questions Hi folks, 1) What is the standard way of dealing with the pop rivets that are holding the fuel filter cover on the later (mine is a 98 M3/4) model cars? From the Bentley manual it looks like a 2 second operation but I am having trouble finding replacement pop rivets for the ones that are on there. Should I just pull them and replace them with sheet metal screws? 2) My power steering fluid reservoir is leaking (can someone confirm that this is indeed the reservoir market (ATF Fluid only) directly behind the alternator, Bentley manual isn't entirely clear) which is not a huge problem since I am under warranty for a couple hundred more miles. The dealer can't get me in for a couple of weeks...what happens if the reservoir runs dry beyond the loss of power steering? Will this hurt anything? Does anyone know the app. volume of the reservoir so I can take a WAG at my time till empty? What is the recommended fluid to be using to add to the reservoir? Thanks, Preston

Should I > just pull them and replace them with sheet metal screws? I changed my fuel filter last September on my '99 M3/2 and there were no pop rivets that held the fuel filter cover on. I think they were something like 8mm sheet metal screws. One tip: Use wooden golf tees to plug up the fuel lines. Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? So come on down, the weather will be the usual boring, perfect San Diego climate. For more information, please see the following webpage link: http://www.sdbmwcca.com/events.htm Click the two links in the header at the top of the calendar if you would like to find out a bit more about what an auto-x is all about. Instructors will be available for every driver and novices are always welcome. Registration for the event is $40 the day of the event. No pre-registration is available. This event is for members of the BMW CCA only. If you are not a member, you can join on the spot at registration for the usual club dues of $35 per year. A helmet is required. #8. [E36] M3 Brake Pad Recommendations - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 08:34:09 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36] M3 Brake Pad Recommendations Thanks for all those that responded to my request for recommendations on different brake pads + rotors, especially Steve, Chip, Jim and Jeremy! Most agreed that the Metal Master was a good upgrade over stock but that it was a bit hard on rotors and might not hold up on the track too well. Everyone had good things to say about the Porterfield R4S pad as a great everyday pad that can hold up to autocrossing, so I decided to go with them. People generally agreed that the Euro rotors were overkill, but since I'm in there, might as well do a slight upgrade! Jim passed on some great information on getting the Euro rotors and Porterfield R4S pads for very nice discounts: Euro Rotors $108.00 each: Alexander Imports 800-800-6425 Porterfield R4S Pads $79 front, $66 back, 800-537-6842 with E36M3 Digest Group discount. Thanks! Colin '98 M3 (JC, ITG, X)

Car has 80k, no visible or apparent PS issues. Car sees approx. 20 track days/year, or about 60 track days total. I recall a thread that pump had non-removable filter in reservoir and only way to clean was to replace reservoir. I also recall a thread about replacing high pressure hose (or was it low pressure?), making sure to use correct clamps. I should have my new springs today (UPS willing). Jay did send me the 8" springs for the front and 7" springs for the rear. I will post a follow up when I get the chance. Also, if I can get my car cleaned up a bit, I may try to take some before and after pics. Thanks again, Greg -----Original Message----- From: Ron Katona [mailto:rkatona@bellatlantic.net] Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2001 5:47 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Re: My GC Coilover setup (long) Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 21:47:43 -0500 From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> Subject: Re: My GC Coilover setup (long) Greg, Eibach doesn't make 9" long , 2.5" ID springs according to their web site. They do make 8 inch-ers. They make 9" in the 2.25" ID, but I'm not sure you can fit those over the M3 front struts. BTW, the wheel moves 1.25" for every inch of spring travel on an E36 M3, so going from a 7" to 8" spring will raise the car 1.25". Going to a 9" spring will raise the car 2.5". If you can't get a 9", the next step is 10" which will undoubtedly be too tall. Ask Jay about the 8's. -- Ron Katona Greg Cernosek wrote: > I plan on talking to Jay (already left a message) about taller springs.
