Given that the stock cams max out the valve train at 7500 rpm (maybe less), I wonder what the margin of safety is with the new cams. If, indeed, there is any margin left at all? Roger W. Theory would be that it's so minor, why worry >about it. If not, would backing off to 2.5 deg "fix" it 8^(? TIA. >Dave Hogg Dave and others... When a tire or wheel rubs on the strut there are only a couple ways to fix the problem and simply reducing camber isn't the answer. It depends on *how* you reduce the camber. The tire or wheel rubs because of its relationship with the strut. Reducing camber via swapping strut hats or adjusting a camber plate will not help because they do not alter that relationship -- only the relationship of the strut/tire/wheel to the chassis. Only removing shims from the lower hub mounting bolts (if you installed them), using a crash bolt in the upper mounting location, or adding a larger spacer will mitigate the problem without changing tires or wheels. Dave, saying whether it's safe to run a tire that rubs *slightly* on the strut is too subjective for me to say. It's obviously better if it doesn't rub. But I'll tell you this... I've done it and had no problems. However my attorney forbids me to say it's safe for you to try it. Hope that helps, BT

#7. Whassup with TC Kline Racing/ProParts (long) - from BobTunnell@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 15:39:31 EST From: BobTunnell@aol.com Subject: Whassup with TC Kline Racing/ProParts (long) I've seen some of discussion on this and other lists lately about TC Kline/ProParts and their products and customer service. I've been asked by several people lately to try to explain what's going on since I used to work for them. If this topic no longer interests you, hit the delete key and move on. This will probably be my only post on the subject. TC is first and foremost a professional racer and team owner. Over the years he's also become a "tuner," developing his own line of components as well as building customer cars for the track and street. Several years ago TC hooked up with two partners in Southern California who are as competent with Mazda race machinery as TC is with BMWs and Hondas. The three of them started a company called ProParts that was designed as a sales arm of their racing and service businesses. They recruited me and Jim Leithauser to help get the biz off the ground. Since that time the new business has experienced all the expected growing pains, and then some. They've experienced problems with production delays, product delivery, and customer service. But they've also experienced steady growth and I know from my involvement that they do far more things well than they screw up. I also know (and so do they) that they need to improve customer service -- essential to any successful business. I was told there is a prevailing impression on this and other lists that TC's only interest is in building and servicing big budget race cars and if you aren't interested in spending big bucks you need not apply. He's certainly demonstrated that he's good at building cars and managing race programs at the highest professional level, but this is certainly not the only way I would describe TC or the mission of his ProParts business. His goal is to be able to provide the same products and services that go into his race car programs to anyone who wants them. Are his prices the lowest on the Internet? No. His expertise (and that of his other staff) goes along with every part he sells and that simply costs more than the dot.com parts wholesalers. The same is true for parts from Will Turner or Jay Morris or any other tuner. Does he have a ways to go on improving customer service? Yes. And he knows it. And he's working on it. Does he have a way to go in improving delivery (particularly of roll bars and cages)? Yes. And he knows and is working on that, too. One thing has hasn't helped is the fact that both Brian Lieb (Ohio) and I have left recently (for unrelated reasons) which has unfortunately coincided with the construction of four new World Challenge cars in the California shop. That has left Jim Leithauser as virtually the sole manager of all parts sales in addition to running the Koni Rebuild Center. Brian is still working for TC on a temporary basis between corporate driving programs and said he'll continue to try to respond to e-mails (BL5194@aol.com) as frequently as possible, but your best source for answers is Jim at ProParts West at 818-888-8904 or ProPartsW@aol.com. Although I left ProParts last October, I try to "listen in" on these lists and answer as many questions for TC as I can, but I shouldn't be relied upon to be his spokesperson. TC is a great problem solver and there is no doubt in my mind that he'll fix the customer service and production problems this new venture is experiencing. If not, like any other business, it won't be around very long. We all vote with our wallets. Not defending or providing excuses, just explaining. I hope that helps, Bob Tunnell PS. If you have comments you want to address to me personally, please copy me at bobt@tunnellracing.com. I don't get to read this list every day.

#10. MXX3 fitment - from Jeff Stowe
Top
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 14:01:59 -0800 From: Jeff Stowe <jrstowe@pacbell.net> Subject: MXX3 fitment Last weekend at sears point pretty much finished my rear tires. After wasting a 1/2 day reading tirerack and looking through old digests, I have decided to stick with the mxx3s for replacement. Yes, they are very pricey but two of these is still cheaper than four of pretty much anything else. Unfortunately, tirerack does not seem to carry the 245/40/zr17. They do carry a 255/40/zr17. Has anyone succesfully fit this tire on their M3? I am running the H&R sports so my car has been lowered and the current 245s seem very tight. I am planning on adding 10mm spring pads to the rear (mainly for cosmetics), will this help fit the 255s? As always, any insights are greatly appreciated. jeff 98 M3/4 93 M5
