You don't live in Dallas, Texas, do you? You don't know much about engine cooling systems do you? Guess not or you would not have asked. Go ahead, take the engine fan off of your Supercharged M3. I'll take bets you ruin your engine in less than 2 months. > 3.) has anyone done this on their street car? Nobody in Dallas. We had 54 days over 100 last year. Can't afford a new fan blade? Funny. :-) For what its worth, I looked at the Turner Motorsport catalog. Sure enough, he has this "$10 reverse thread nut." I even sent TMS an e-mail asking for more info. I'll report back if I get a response. However, I think you need to look at the calendar. Sunday is April 1 - aka "April Fool's Day." Talk about smiles per mile! If I were lucky enough to get as much track time as you, I'd be itching for any excuse to throw in a set of Koni's (sorry, just like to tweak too much!). I got me a car in Hong Kong (a 964 Carrera 4) but have hardly gotten any seat time since I travel so much and barely get 1-2 days a week at home. It look me 6 months to finish my first tank of gas! (I know, pathetic.) But, I can say that what ever driving I do tends to be hard driving! Cheers, - Jay P.S. I helped a buddy get an E36 328is last month. In spite of my fling, I still love/miss BMW's and am trying to get my friend to try my JimC intake (which I kept just in case!)... >Hope that helps, >Jim Bassett >1998 M3/4 - still original shocks & struts @ ~86,000 miles

To "learn" how to drive I have been to 8 BMW/POC Driving Schools, 2 Skip Barber solo lapping days and 17 autocrosses. I was really hoping to be that 18 year old at Vista getting the e46 :-) Will Gilbert 99 M3 KX 500cc Shifter Cart

Firstly, under no circumstances should you remove the fan on a street car. I repeat, DO NOT remove the stock fan on a street car. Now to answer your questions: 1) You will see hp gains, but not enough to justify it unless you are looking for that last .001 of a second in order to beat one of those pesky RX-7's in SCCA ITS racing. You definitely won't "feel" any more hp. 2) Sure, your car won't overheat as long as there is air flowing through the radiator. But, what if you have to sit in the drive thru at McDonald's? What if you run into traffic from a wreck on the highway? What if you leave the car running while you run inside your house to grab something? On a hot day, your car will overheat VERY quickly without air flowing through the radiator. Have you looked into what it would cost to replace a warped head on an M3? Good gosh man, BUY A NEW DAMN FAN! 3) Hell no. I've done it on both my race cars though, mostly for hp gain, and because under REALLY high G's, my fan was getting into the radiator and cutting holes in it. And even on those, I have an electric fan that I can turn on while sitting in the pits. I can't tell you how many times I have almost forgotten to turn the fan on and nearly ruined my race engines...despite the BIG "Turn on the FAN DUMMY" sign that I have on my dash. As much as you drive your everyday car, I guarantee you that you would eventually forget to turn the electric fan on and end up with a warped head. 4) You are just being cheap, buy a new fan. -Bryan Watts '95 M3 streetcar...stock fan '92 325is ITS racecar...electric fan '95 M3 BMod racecar...electric fan

But you know, I don't think that there's anything "wrong" with the car that the Koni's would "fix". I'm still not at the limits of the suspension, and the several instructors that have driven the car on the track have commented on how good the car feels. Plus, I have roughly a 100 mile roundtrip commute (or will again next week, when I get back to work). Of course, whatever suspension work I do in the future will be either H-Stock or H-Prepared legal :-) >P.S. I helped a buddy get an E36 328is last month. I swapped the strut mounts yesterday and got a surprise. A rough measurement tells me I now have about 2,8 degrees on one side and 3,3 on the other. This sounds a bit much too me. Looking at the car it looks like a lot too, not that that matters... Anyway, the car felt *very* nice to drive anyway which surprised me too. I was at least expecting some twitchiness. Nice bite at turn in :-) But what *really* worries me is how long the tires will last? A hobby racing friend working in a tire shop told me I wouldn't get far at all. Next long drive is down to Nürburgring which will be over 3000km in all. And since I have no idea on the amount of wear to expect I'm really really worried... /Magnus Thomé BTW: I run 245/35 18" PZero-C all round... > -----Original Message----- > From: Jim Bassett [mailto:jimbassett@home.com] > Sent: den 28 mars 2001 09:10 > To: E36M3 > Subject: Re: [E36M3] New struts and bearing swap? > > > Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 23:07:53 -0800 > From: Jim Bassett <jimbassett@home.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] New struts and bearing swap? > > At 09:40 PM 3/27/01, Jay Sala wrote: > >I bet you can't even count how many track days you've done > on your M3! > > No, but I can look it up :-) > > >Talk about smiles per mile! Many teenagers will wad up their cars without the benefit of 300+ hp. This kind of car only eases the ability to do it quicker. I think the insurance industry is justified in their assessment of this class of driver (scary I am agreeing with the insurance industry). An eighteen year old with an E46 M3 ..... ====================================================== ......and sometimes we can generalize about slightly older drivers. When Porsche first introduced the 930 back in the mid-70's, well-to-do professionals (many of them doctors) were having accidents within the first 1000 miles as the sudden power transition (at boost) and trailing throttle oversteer was beyond their driving capabilities.
