If you do remove the fan and fan clutch you will want to replace your electric/aux fan switch with a switch that engages at a lower temperature. This way you can get the best of both worlds. The fan blades found on the engines of BMW's are often ill-balanced and as such generate undesirable engine vibration and even premature water pump or catastrophic fan blade failure. I first learned the benefits of fan removal when I removed the engine fan from my E30 M3. I was surprised to find out that the S14B23 engine as lumpy as it was, was surprisingly smoother once I had removed my engine fan. Again, if you do remove your fan, unless your car is track only, you must make proper adjustments by changing out your fan switch. To change out your fan switch to accommodate engine fan blade removal you must first determine the type of fan switch currently installed on your vehicle. There are two different types of fan switch connectors installed on the E36. The fan switch is the little round sensor that screws into the (passenger side) side tank of the radiator. The sensor has a 3 wire connector plugged into it. Pre 3/97 the switch had a white plastic housing with 2.5mm (~1/8") pins and the post 3/97 production switch has a black plastic connector with very small .5mm (~1/32") pins. The lower temp switch replacement switches on (low/high) fan speed at 80/88 degrees C instead of 91/99 degrees C. This allows your car to maintain the vehicles temp sans engine fan and clutch assembly. In really really hot weather at a stand still in traffic you may have to switch off your A/C but the performance gain is well worth the change. We stock both types of replacement lower temperature switches for the fan blade removal. The price of the temp switch (either version) is $37.50. If you car is supercharged I would recommend keeping the engine fan as your car can use any extra cooling it can get. #3. High Pitch Fan on start up??? - from Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV

Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 13:09:31 -0500 From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV Subject: High Pitch Fan on start up??? Ok guys I'm looking for some mechanical help. I remember reading somewhere (bimmer.org or this list) about how M3's have a high pitched fan that sometimes comes on for a few minutes at start up in order to remove some sort of exhaust gases (I think). I think this may be true for all E36 6 cylinder cars, because my 97 328i has been doing it for about a month now. Starting around 68k miles this fan would come on for the first couple of miles until the car warmed up then shut down. The colder it is outside, the longer it stays on. Car had Insp II about 20k ago. Questions are: What exactly is this fan again? Why is it coming on now (as opposed to the first 68k miles of ownership)? and Will a repair have to be made to something that is causing this (emissions/exhaust?) issue? PS- does the group recommend using blue loctite on the allen screws? i ran out when installing the tranny rings, but my friend said that the dissimilar metals will eventually bond...since i didnt have any, i wrapped some black tape aroung the rings themselves, just in case the screws would back out...and i'm too busy doing skool werk on spring break to go under the car and check... Don't we live in America, the land of the market economy? If people are willing to pay $67K for the car then I don't see any reason for the dealer to not raise the price to meet demand. Nobody complained when they had to lower the price of the LTW cars to get them off the lot. It's not a "right" to buy the car at MSRP. It's not even a privlegde. It's just economics. Note that this opinion doesn't necesarily extend to essentials like bread and milk - people gotta eat even if they can't afford to pay the market price. But an M3 is just a toy and a very limited number of them exist. As a consumer you have the right to choose another car. You chose an E55. I bought a Boxster. Someone else will get E46 M3. I know there is a go kart track on the eastern end of Long Island but I am mainly interested in SCCA Formula Ford racing. Any information on mailing lists such as these would be great. Thanks, Chris
