I just need a strip 1-5/8" wide and about 10" long for a project. This is for the M3. I will post pictures when finished to show what I've done. #5. Overheating Problem - Need Advice - from Peter Guagenti
Top
Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 14:12:14 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Overheating Problem - Need Advice While I was driving on I-80 last night (at like 2am) my wife's car started overheating. I was able to get over to the shoulder before it finally hit the red. After giving the car a chance to cool, I restarted her and the water temp was okay. However, once I started to go again, it started to overheat. If the car was at idle it would cool off, if it was at a driving RPM the temp would climb. I was able to limp her home by staying on the gas to get momentum, then rolling along at idle to let her cool. This is not behaving like any other overheating issue I have ever had. I just had the thermostat replaced, as it broke in the open position. Bill Arnold did it, so I'm doubtful that it's mechanic error. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I was hoping to have at least a general idea before calling a mechanic. Any advice is appreciated. - peterg P.S. As an aside, if there is someone with a tow vehicle and trailer in the SF East Bay or North Bay that would be willing to help me get the car to a mechanic, I would be very happy to pay for your time, your gas, and buy you a beer. You would also have my undying gratitude. The tow truck drivers are asking like $75-$150 to tow the car to my usual mechanics' and I'm loathe to pay those thieves anything. Especially when I called AAA last night and they were going to have me wait by the side of the road for an hour and half.

Could it be that the impeller is slipping on the water pump's shaft? Or that the exterior belt is slipping? Either way, there'd be enough grip to move some coolant at idle, but at higher speeds the required flow just wouldn't be there ... -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 15:38:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Bishop <jason@secondhat.com> Subject: broken exhaust (stock '95) I've had a exhaust rattle which I finally tracked down to a couple of broken brackets holding one of the heat shields on. I was considering removing the last section including muffler and welding the brackets back on again. Is the last section of pipe stainless or galvanized? Anybody know how thin? Is it weldable? thanks folks Jason

Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 19:26:15 -0400 From: "Dave Spragg" <dspragg@mediaone.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Overheating Problem - Need Advice On the depressing side it could be a blown head gasket. Check everything else first but if that fails it could be the head gasket. They can squeeze out from blown the block and the head even without actually opening up a passage between the oil inside and the coolant outside. What happens is the bit that has squeezed out of place blocks enough of the coolant flow that the car can run at very low work loads like idle but can't handle more than that because regardless of the health of the pump and such the flow is just too restricted. In lesser cases it can be the same except that the car will overheat on the track but run fine at 70 mph on the highway. I hope this isn't the case but it happens with track driven 325's, 328's, and E36 M3's. It happened to 4 cars in two days at a Watkins Glen BMW CCA event last year. My 330is was one of them. :( Dave Spragg dave@spragg.com Natick, MA 99 M3 Sharked 92 330is Sharked and Supercharged (undergoing surgery) -----Original Message----- From: Bora Akyol [mailto:akyol@akyol.org] Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2001 6:00 PM To: E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] Overheating Problem - Need Advice Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 14:51:03 -0700 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Overheating Problem - Need Advice Pete It sounds like you may have one of the following: 1) Bad water pump 2) Blocked radiator 3) Bad thermostat 4) Leaking coolant.
