Heck, everything since the early 70's from BMW uses an aluminum head. BTW, the M50TU ('93-'95 2.5L and 3.0L) and M52 ('96-'98 2.8L and 3.2L) use the same aluminum cylinder head casting. The M52 head is missing a hole for a temp sensor used by the M50TU head, but the hole is easily drilled and tapped to add the sensor. Nick

#4. Initial Comments on 6 speed + 3.46 Ring & Pinion + Quaife - from Wayne Miller

Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 23:34:00 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: Initial Comments on 6 speed + 3.46 Ring & Pinion + Quaife I have had the 6 speed in the car for a few weeks now but I just had the 3.46 ring & pinion and a Quaife differential installed last Thursday. All I can say is that the 6 speed without the 3.46 is okay but the 6 speed with the 3.46 is GREAT! What a difference this makes. I am sure that part of the seemingly improved acceleration is because the engine revs faster and you are shifting faster due to the lower gearing and part is due to the real improved acceleration from the low gearing. The car no longer lugs from lower speeds in 6th and the 1-2-3 under full throttle is great. On the highway in 6th, the engine is smack between a stock 5 speed and 6 speed (both with a 3.23). I tried running a bit with the car in 5th so I could see what it would be like for people who do the diff but not the 6 speed and it is revving higher but, if you don't mind the normal high revs, you probably will not mind this either. As far as the Quaife goes, I didn't get a great chance to test it out because it rained for most of the weekend. I did some tests but the tires can only grip so much in the rain and I kept breaking them free. When Don Fields (at AutoSport where they installed the diff) took me for a ride, I could feel under acceleration during a turn that the differential was working and making the car jerk a little instead of sliding the rear end around. His estimate is that you could add 10-15% more throttle exiting the turn than would be possible with just the standard limited-slip. I will post more when I get to a big parking lot to do more tests. Overall, I am very happy with the entire conversion, except for the cost. I bought the new diff from Brett Anderson at Koala Motorsports (440-463-6422) and was very happy with his pricing and service so, if you are considering any of this, give him a call. (I have no financial interest in this what-so-ever, I am just a satisfied customer) -Wayne

There has to be something to the E34 M5 touring being a very popular model, not to mention the audi RS4 touring. All these cars , specially the RS4 are indeed very high performance. Why build a station wagon with 130 HP more than an S4. I'm sure an M3 touring would again be very popular..... If I really wanted a '2 door body' it would be a real 2 door sports car.... Unwrapped it and it was so pretty I just had to stick it into the car. *wow* what a beautiful piece of work! Truly a work of art. unobtrusive, I think with some high density roll bar padding, I might even be able to have people in the back seat. It really stiffens the car, too. Was very impressed with this... The car feels quite a bit more solid. I'm definitely happy with it... at first, I balked at paying $400 for a harness bar, but now that I've installed it, and seen it, I can see that it's worth at least that much. I wouldn't say it's tragic (although I don't have a lot of experience in this area) as my car had 38k miles with a supercharger before blowing it's head gasket. Most all of that mileage was to, from and at the tracks of this region. Not bad for any car in this one anecdotal example particularly with a supercharger. BUT if you have ever seen an M3 head opened up or looked at the gasket the issue is clear. With pretty high compression and the bored nature of the 3.0 and 3.2 block due to it's heritage in the 325 and 328... the amount of space (And thus gasket) between the cylinders is very small. This comes from a guy with a Honda sportbike fetish I should add. ;) Take a look sometime, you will be surprised.
