Any recommendations? Factory fill? Mobil 1 synthetic? Also, for the tranny, I assume anything that meets D4 ATF requirements, correct? And for the diff, 75W90, but what about friction modifiers? If I go with Mobil 1, would I need to add anything? Thanks, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Assuming you already have Redline Fluids in there - If there are not the best you can get they are bound to be pretty close. Also for a diff and tranny Redline is essentially a lifetime fluid - no need to change. Okay, I might change at 100K miles. I usually put Redline in when I buy a car and then forget about it. My personal recommendation is to change the fluid after about 2500-10K miles and then leave it alone. On tracked cars, I would STILL change tranny and diff fluid annually to look at it. I usually drain it into a clean plastic container and then strain it through a coffee filter (2 of them) to see what is floating around in there. Do this often enough and you will be able to see differences. On heavily tracked cars, I'd recommend changing the tranny & diff fluid at the "old" change interval - 30,000 miles. This was recommended to me by my mechanic, Bill Arnold, given the amount of track time my car usually gets (except for this past weekend :-( - more on that later). Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#7. EWS or Broken Ignition Tab - from Robert Jackowitz
Top
Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 13:50:36 -0400 From: Robert Jackowitz <RJackowitz@HARVPART.COM> Subject: EWS or Broken Ignition Tab I know this has been discussed in years past... More and more frequently, I find that when I seek to turn the ignition key, it spins freely. Removing and re-inserting the key solves the problem. Is this a result of the driveway protection (EWS) resetting/recoding or is it indicative of a broken tab in the ignition key cylinder? Thanks, Rob

#8. Power steering kaput at the track - from Jim Bassett
Top
Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 10:57:04 -0800 From: Jim Bassett <jimbassett@home.com> Subject: Power steering kaput at the track Well, it was bound to happen, my first breakdown at the track in the E36. I was at Buttonwillow on Friday and in one of the afternoon sessions went around one of the hairpin turns and the steering required MUCH more effort than normal. Hmm, OK, lost the power steering. Get back into the paddock and there is fluid EVERYWHERE on the left front underside. Crap! Call Bill Arnold's shop while under the car, and we think it might be the steering rack (dust boot gurgles a bit). He highly recommended I not drive it home. So, I call Donna. She's preparing to trailer Guido to BW, and I plead to use the trailer to get my car home on Sunday :-) She agrees, but calls back a few hours later - she's having problems with the borrowed trailer. No problem - Plan B. (Besides, I'd be paying back that debt to Donna for a LONG time :-)). My friend John (owner of the E30 M3 I hope to be racing next month) comes down and we get the car to Bill's shop. Turns out the leak is from a hose going to the power steering cooler (didn't know there was one). But, there is a bit of noise in the steering boots, but not yet enough to worry about according to Bill. However, I really disliked being stuck at the track, so we'll put in a new rack while Bill has the car. Hopefully, the car will be ready Wed AM. (Great timing, I start my new job tomorrow.) Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - soon with new steering rack, and back on the track April 17 :-)

#9. Overheating Horror Stories - from Jonathan Evans

Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 14:03:19 -0400 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: Overheating Horror Stories Folks: My 95 overheated about 2 months ago, and to no surprise it was the plastic pump. Smack head with hand for not changing it out earlier. I swear it had exactly 60k on it when it happened too. So, I had coolant everywhere and red hot temp on the gauge for about a minute. Got it towed and wasn't run until the new pump was in. No leaks anywhere else, etc.. So I take it to VIR and have a grand ole time. Needle never moves passed 12 o'clock (I know it's an idiot gauge, new gauges are on the list). DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE HEAD GASKET??? My mechanic said everything looks fine. This car was tracked before I got it. Has 62.5k on it now. I plan on keeping the car forever, tracking 2 or 3 times a year between getting groceries. Bentley is in the mail. Is this a Do It Yourself project??? The waterpump was going to be the first, oh well. Thanks Jonathan Evans 95 M3 Raleigh

#11. Rear Sub-frame - from Robert Jackowitz

Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 14:01:30 -0400 From: Robert Jackowitz <RJackowitz@HARVPART.COM> Subject: Rear Sub-frame Listers: I have my final "in-warranty" service coming up next week, so I'm thinking about having the dealer look at a few areas that are potentially problematic for us M3ers. One of those areas is the rear subframe and related mounts/bushings. Is this a request that I can make that is fairly easy to visually check or does it require any degree of disassembly? Thanks, Rob '97
