Jim Millet suggested a place to me that gives a discount for list members, but I lost the post and, of course, I can't remember where it was. I DO remember having a memory once, and it was nice. The old seals and bolts will probably be rusted to hell, and having new ones makes the install a lot easier, and ensures a better seal as well. I learned this the hard way, and ended up having to drive to the dealer with no muffler :) (This was kind of fun actually !) -Adam '95 M3 > -----Original Message----- > From: Vern Anderson [mailto:VAnderson@IVW.com] > Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 5:00 PM > To: E36M3 > Subject: [E36M3] Conforti intake install advice needed > > > Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 16:50:50 -0400 > From: Vern Anderson <VAnderson@IVW.com> > Subject: Conforti intake install advice needed > > I hope to install a JC cold-air intake, Shark Injector and > a Flowmaster > exhaust on my 98 M3 this week or the next. #7. alternator or compressor? - from Gary A. Preece

Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 19:40:49 -0400 From: "Gary A. Preece" <gapreece@entreky.net> Subject: alternator or compressor? Hey guys and girls, I have a 1995 M3 production 10/94. There is a squeal coming from either the alternator or compressor. When I turn on the AC the squeal gets a little louder. But, when I turn on the headlights the squeal gets much louder. So, I suspect that it is the alternator. Does anyone know a better test to make the determination? How do I tell if my alternator is the 80 or 140 amp? I know it is supposed to be stamped on it, but I could not see it right off the bat. Where do I look? Is there a write up anywhere or is it too simple? I just put on Konis with H&R OE springs. What a huge difference! Love them. Thanks in advance. Gary Preece Louisville, KY CCA #158110

Maybe both are due, hence the squeal with both AC and an added electrical load. Another suspect point is the idler and/or tensioner pullies. They're prone to wear and can cause a squeal when loaded. One of those 2 ft. monsters out of the $2.99 tool bin are great. There is no better use for such a big ass screwdriver. Keep your face outta the fan while doing this _____________________________________________ 1. Put the tip on the casing of the alternator. Press firmly. 2. Put your ear down right up next to the end of the handle and listen. 3. Repeat for compressor. Determine Culprit. It's a great stethoscope. Or you can go buy one for about $12 from Pep Boys (Lisle makes one I think). - Skip Kee "Gary A. Preece" wrote: > > > Hey guys and girls, > > I have a 1995 M3 production 10/94.
