A friend just got on the waiting list at a local dealer and is #48, and they are predicting delivery in 1 1/2 years. So they will rattle and squeal like stuck pigs on the street. It goes away in a day or two and then returns on the next fill up. Does this sound like the charcoal cannister? On a related subject...I checked the fuel pump and sender (left and right sides) hose connections. Nothing obvious there, but there was a trace oder of gas. Question...if I was to change the hose clamps as a precaution is it advisable to switch to regular screw-type clamps (stock uses those funky spring-type)? Also, I assume I need to de-pressurize the fuel system before attempting this...do I just pull a fuse when the engine is running? Any help is appreciated! Roger W. People look at you like you're in a low rent car or something. Also, the squeal is unlike any other normal brake squeal you hear. Chris, I'm using the Kumho 225/45 on a 7.5" rim and it bulges at the edges a bit. I think that this tire would be a perfect fit on a 8" rim. For some reason a lot of race tires are sized differently than their street counterparts. I'm heard that the Kumho 225/45 is about the same size as the old g-force 235/40, which is the same as a street 245/40. I've used the g-force R1 and I can't recommend it unless you can get them really hot and you really know what you're doing. The Yoko is a good tire for its durability but it's not going to be as competitive as the Kuhmos. The Kumho is positioned between the Yoko and the Hoosiers for durability and stick. Of course my real recommendation is to get some cheap street tires (RE-71, RE-730, SP8000, etc) and use those for at least 6-7 driver's ed events. The M3 has a very high limit on decent street tires. Moving to a race tire too soon will hurt your learning and the less forgiving nature can cause real problems for novices. You don't want the R4S if you're spending any time on the track. They get REALLY hot, and then turn into a white powder while boiling your brake fluid...... The R4 is a good pad IMHO. They are a little more street oriented than the PF90s in that they give you more braking power when the pads are cold (ie street use), but are still very respectable on the track. The PF90s are noticeably more 'absent' when they're cold, but stop you like a brick wall once they get hot. They are very gentle on rotors and seem to last forever. My favorite pads by far, and I do leave them on between track sessions. If I were doing 4 or 5 medium speed events/year I'd stay with stock pads. The next step up would be the R4 pads. Their only real downside is that they squeal. Only you can decide where on the 'extra braking power = squeal' equation you come down. One thing I didn't mention (that maybe I should have) is that I've been a PCA/BMWCCA instructor since '92, built a few production based racecars of my own. I also have a Formula Continental and race it in SCCA. (check my website for the gruesome details) I've also done test-driving for Mercedes, but I don't not lump them in the performance category (grin). I was mostly interested in what fit the car, given, as you so astutely pointed out, DOT road race tires are sized differently than the street versions seem to be. Practical experience with the car and tires in question is worth a lot! And since this list has so many great people who have tried everything (or at least seen it done) it was the perfect place to ask "what's what".
