Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 08:03:02 -0700 (PDT) From: John Bergstrom <john0990@yahoo.com> Subject: lightweight flywheel on '95 M3 The time has come, my '95 M3 needs a new clutch. I am seriously considering having a lightweight flywheel installed "while we're in there". I am interested in hearing from those of you who have done this, specifically: 1) which flywheel (vendor) did you buy? 2) did you have your software changed to compensate for possible stalling problems? 3) what new vibrations/noises did you hear, and could you live with them? 4) was the performance increase worth the $ and the side effects? Thanks to all in advance. John '95 M3 with bunches of stuff __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Eventually, your reply may look like: Subject: RE: Re: RE: RE: Re: original subject c. If you are changing the subject, change the SUBJECT field to reflect the new subject. 2. Strip multiple footers and excess quotes. Messages can gather substantial debris in just a few exchanges. Every reply gets another footer appended to it, even if one is (or more are) already present. After a few replies, you can have quite a collection of identical footers. Please delete all of them before sending. Rest assured that the system will not forget to add another. Same problem with excess quotes. Can we keep them to a minimum by deleting all but the few needed words or lines? I too have ventured down a similar path as yours, however the PO had the thermostat replaced but made no mention of it at the time of purchase. I too have had coolant leaking from the radiator cap and replaced the cap only to have the coolant reappear. The coolant only appears after about 20 minutes + of hard driving. I'll be getting a compression test done to determine the condition of the head gasket seal. All the info I can dig up on Metal vs. Plastic impeller dates seem fuzzy; most say the changed occur right around 6/96. For me, I'll have it changed when I get the compression test. It's a gamble, but I rather err on the safe side than to be storming through the backroads and have it fail. Same mentality as buying good backpacking gear; you want the best you can afford _now_ because there are no upgrades in back country. Just a data point. I'll let you know what I find after the tests. tom eby 96 m3 74 02 -- >-------------------- 10 -------------------- >Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 21:57:03 -0400 >From: "Stan Shaw III" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> >Subject: Re: '96 M3 and overheating > >What is the metal water pump vs plastic water pump impeller date? > >My car has 105k, now outside extended warranty, and was built 7/96. > >Under warranty I brought my car in at least once, perhaps twice to complain >about antifreeze leaking around radiator cap. As an aside, I see that BMP now offers a high-strength head gasket for rebuilds on E36 6-cylinders. They are also selling completely rebuilt cylinder heads for $1500. -peterg

I bought mine (a 12lb one) from TC Kline and paid just under $600 delivered. I know that you can get them for a little less but they were helpful on the phone so I gave them my business. > 2) did you have your software changed to compensate for possible stalling problems? No and my car is already Sharked > 3) what new vibrations/noises did you hear, and could you live with them? At first, there weren't any vibrations but now I find that they come and go. If I have been sitting in traffic for a while, I get the slight rattling noise. It doesn't bother me at all and it isn't always there. > 4) was the performance increase worth the $ and the side effects? If you are already doing the clutch - YES! There is little or no extra labor involved and you will kick yourself if you decide to change this later. The acceleration improvement in first and second is noticeable (even more so when you do a 3.46 ring and pinion). -Wayne '99 M3/2 with just about everything
