This list far exceeds my expectations when it comes to information concerning the given topics. > Based on your description of the experience, the only thing I can offer > is... > > Sign up for some driver's schools and learn to properly drive your car > before you kill yourself! BTW I didn't happen to notice your credentials listed in your evaluation of my experience, but since you have plugged driving school (which IS a goal for me at some point) I must assume that you are an instructor of some sort or a car salesman given your suggestion for me to sell the car I have and buy another. My question was related to the response I felt from the car. Given that there are a lot of variables involved I was basically looking for some idea of what I was experiencing. It could have been as simple as uneven tire pressure. Seriously, I'm just a guy that enjoys driving my car. I educate myself at every opportunity and would love to someday attend a school. I strongly believe it would be a positive experience (it is just not in the cards at the moment). I don't auto-X or race, I just occasionally have some fun on winding country roads and interesting expressway on/off ramps (btw I never said I was "satisfied" with "adequate driving capabilities"). Thanks again for your reply, I am a firm believer in that I learn something from every experience and everyone I meet, even if that lesson is what not to do. When I make it to a school I will let you know. EF > If you're satisfied with "adequate" driving capabilities, sell your M3 > immediately and buy yourself an "adequate" driving appliance. Also, be aware that I used the stock clutch fork with this particular flywheel on my '95. Some flywheels, with some M3s will require the 96+ fork so sometimes you'll get advice to go to that. I purchased one of those, but it didn't fit requiring a move back to the stock fork. I lost some time and money on that. I'd stick with the stock fork unless the flywheel manufacturer specifically says to use something else. The stock clutch is also sometimes difficult to get on short notice from the dealers - I had to wait a week for one last year. If you're going to do the whole thing (good idea) order the clutch and related parts early. -- Ron Katona

#6. LTW flywheel - from Ed Tang

I am seriously considering having a lightweight flywheel installed "while we're in there". I am interested in hearing from those of you who have done this, specifically: >1) which flywheel (vendor) did you buy? TC Kline. The flywheel needs to be machined to fit the dowel pins in. No problem. >2) did you have your software changed to compensate for possible stalling problems? I was already sharked and everything runs well. I had considered reprogramming when the car started stalling when I would depress the clutch as I approached a light. I would just put it in 2nd gear and kick start the car again. It happened the first month I had it but the car hasn't stalled since. Strike that, it happened once last month. >3) what new vibrations/noises did you hear, and could you live with them? At first there were no noises from the car. After a week I could hear a faint vibration. At WOT you can definitely hear it. >4) was the performance increase worth the $ and the side effects? The car literally flies now. You hit redline a lot quicker. Sensitive as the subject may be, over-rev: it is "possibly" easier to do and "perhaps" more dangerous with a ltw unit. Don't quote me on that though. Throttle response is immediate. The same with getting off the gas. I found that at some corners around my house I don't have to brake anymore. The inertia leaves as quick as it enters. I never considered it as a stand alone upgrade but when I burnt out the clutch and flywheel during a snow storm, I went with a LTW one instead of the factory dual mass unit. You will definitely feel the difference. Being that I needed a new flywheel anyway, the cost was actually less than factory. If your flywheel is good, you might want to consider keeping it. If you want the great throttle response with a few quirks, get the ltw unit. Good luck. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? After the Sunday session at Laguna Seca (November '00) I noticed that my brakes held up better than any other time. Reason? I asked my instructor to help with my braking technique. I finished the school at Buttonwillow this past weekend (both in the B group) with ZERO brake problems. This time I made 2 changes, ran PF-90's all way around, and had the instructor (who races an e30m3) critique and improve my technique. The pf-90's are waaaay dirty, check this pic and take a look at my front wheels (insert shameless plug) http://www.apexcone.com/LogosandPics/Buttonwillow0301/bl-75.jpg okay, it's the yellow one (nice color, eh?) also, the pf-90's squeal like a guy trying out for a leading role in the re-make of the movie "Deliverance" (yeah, bad joke). If you are from Tennessee, maybe you want to pass on the pf-90's. As for re-building calipers, you might want to ask Sean Hester or Jim Powell or Jim Bassett. They probably have more combined brake experience than any other non-German in the western hemisphere. Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 17:15:02 -0400 From: "JUSTIN GERRY" <JGERRY@butchers.com> Subject: Brakes (What else?) I know this thread keeps reappearing over and over. Its time for a new set of brake pads/maybe rotors for my '97 M3. I do a few drivers schools a year. LRP was yesterday. What a fun course (first time)!! I know I boiled the brake fluid yesterday... I don't have much pedal at all. I also had just under 50% of my brake pad left at the beginning of the day. My guess is that my pads are really close to needing replacement. Considering the age of the rotors, I may replace them as well. I am using stock Jurids. Jurids lack the bite of a true race pad, but they are really easy on the rotors. Trying to decide whether to take the R4/PF90/other brakepad route or go with stock brakes again. Questions: 1) I've bled brakes on my old 2002, usually it was recommended that you start with the wheel that is farthest from the master cylinder, does this still hold true? Yes, I would like to use a 1-man brake bleeder, either a push type (through reservoir) or pull type (through caliper like Griots Garage). 2) Do people normally rebuild the brake caliper (or at least replace the seals) when replacing pads? I would imagine that heat/salt etc must be hard on the caliper seals. Is there a rebuild kit from BMW that I should get? Any P/N for this? Any tips? 3) Any special tools or tricks that people use to get rotors/calipers/brake pads off/rebuilt?
