Braking for the corkscrew gets a little interesting as you go over that sharp crest... Depending on the car your driving and the speed you obtain going uphill, you may not be able to do all your braking after the crest and before the turn-in so you have to do some before the crest, lift, and re-apply after the crest. We all know what happens when a car under heavy braking gets disturbed going over a crest (or other similar surface irregularity), right?? For those unfamiliar with L.S., there's a concrete wall on your left, a tire wall straight ahead and a long way down a unimproved hill to your right. The rest of L.S. braking (aside from the aforementioned 2 and 11, both of which have some run-off room) is pretty straight-forward. (125 or so in the front straight). Laguna has braking into turn 2, which is hairy but I think that is the only really hard braking zone... (into turn 11 is hard, but you aren't going as fast, and into the corkscrew is uphill...) -kit 97 m3

I would make mine a little shorter though - don't like the idea of a piece of metal at the head/neck level just a few inches away..... FWIW, I used a hama (?) suction cup one. Mounted it in the RR window for one event last spring. Worked great. GMK '97 M3/4

Changed the thermostat at the same time and 20k later, the needle has never ventured past the middle position. However, I never had any coolant leak. #5. Side trim replacement... - from Juan Rico
Top
Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 14:09:12 -0700 From: Juan Rico <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Side trim replacement... Hi, I need to replace the rear quarter panel black trim piece on my car (between the door and the rear wheel.) I've been told to just yank it out, but I'm afraid to break any clips and make a mess of it... Can I do this myself (and if so, how would I go about it) or should I let a pro take care of it? TIA Juan.

I had the Blizzaks on and I've never had a problem with them. In fact, they are much better in ice than snow, however, still exceptional in both. Anyways, I had no problem on the streets coming back from work. At my condo, they neglected the plowing necessary to get the cars in. Once you go into the condo entrance you're kinda screwed b/c it's at a busy intersection so you can't back out. There was 7 inches of snow they didn't plow. Needless to say, I put my upset feelings away to swing by an abandoned Cadillac in the middle of the entrance. I don't like plowing things that sit higher than the front spoiler would allow but I had the Blizzaks so what the hell. I was fine until the snow shot up to about nine inches. There is only so much a snow tire could do. I'm thinking that when these plows come through, they probably won't care if they hit the car or not. I have about 150 ft to make it to the garage. Well finesse turned into hasty impatience and I literally melted the flywheel and boiled the oil in the diff to get it into the garage. I should have left the car there. My mechanic showed me the fly wheel and clutch disc. It literally melted onto the flywheel and the teeth were chewed up. The diff was dry. I had to laugh but the tears were coming out at the same time. I was able to drive the car for maybe two miles before it was toast. I had it towed and fixed within three days. Not bad. Well, I'd never considered the flywheel but the circumstances dictated this one. I guess nothing would be gained if I went with an original flywheel. I'm happy with the results though. Chalk one up for experience. #7. Buttonwillow: On-line student eval form - from Jim Powell
Top
Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2001 14:11:55 -0700 From: Jim Powell <jsp98m3@apexcone.com> Subject: Buttonwillow: On-line student eval form Some of you may have tried to use the on-line Buttonwillow driver's school student evaluation form on the San Diego Chapter website. Due to a peculiarity of Frontpage, the form wasn't working correctly. After Herculean efforts by fellow list member and NYC member, Ken Weingold, it's finally working. So if you have not filled out an evaluation form yet or would like to give more comments, go to: http://www.sdbmwcca.com/Forms/bmw_cca_san_diego_chapterstudent.htm and fill out the form. The driver's school organizers appreciate any comments and suggestions you may have. Jim Powell Webmeister Autocross Chair San Diego Chapter

#10. Autocross volunteers needed - from Jim Powell
Top
Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2001 15:28:40 -0700 From: Jim Powell <jsp98m3@apexcone.com> Subject: Autocross volunteers needed The San Diego Chapter could use some volunteers at this Saturday's autocross at Qualcomm Stadium. Quite a few of our regular volunteers are going to be out of town. So if you hadn't planned on running or have a spouse or teenager who would like to help out and learn a few things about timing, registration or course setup, we could use your help. The gates open at the West lot at 6:30am and by 7:00am things are moving along at a pretty good clip. The event runs until 4:30-5:00pm and any help you could volunteer throughout the day would be appreciated. I'm dragging my two teenagers out of bed, I expect to see a few more :) Jim Powell Autocross Chair San Diego Chapter
