#2. Various noises, '97 M3 - from Seth Frader-Thompson

Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 22:28:52 -0600 From: "Seth Frader-Thompson" <fraderth@colorado.edu> Subject: Various noises, '97 M3 I bought a silver '97 M3/4 with 42k miles on Monday. The car is in very good shape, but there are a few things I'm wondering about. The first two: When I fully depress the clutch with the car stopped, I can feel some vibration and hear a faint noise (maybe a rubbing noise? hard to describe, so I won't). It's almost as if the clutch isn't fully disengaging. Is this normal? When I depress the clutch with the car in motion (e.g. when I'm shifting, but I don't have to be changing gears), I hear a whining sound that drops off as the revs drop and goes away completely when they drop to idle. So, for example, shifting slowly from fourth to fifth, I'd hear: "vrooooom..... wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrmmm..... vrooom....." Is this normal? (Talk about a lame effort to describe the sound.) I test drove a '97 M3/2 before I bought this car and am pretty sure I didn't hear the clutch whine, but I'm not at all sure about the clutch vibration Thanks in advance. More questions to come in a few days pending some investigation of my own. :) Seth

I would think this would be about the only time you'd need to rebuild calipers - if the rubber boot has pulled away from the caliper or torn. But I be interested to hear if anyone has a regular rebuild schedule. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - new steering rack in, needs an alignment :-)

I now have one courtesy of the county of Rotenburg am Wuemme. I was doing 84 in a 70 km/h zone around a rural bus stop along my regular commute. I had just passed a car and didn't think that quickly slowing down was worthwhile, as the school bus and kids had left hours before, the speed limit would shortly go to 100, and there was no one and nothing around. Except for this one, curious car, safely off the road, parked at the bus stop. Fish think, but too slowly. The officer who took and processed the radar picture was a real artist. For my 40 DM, he sent a work that even tells a story. I will have to scan the page and post it somewhere. -John '96 318is -- john.firestone@nord-com.net

#9. LTW Flywheel - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 06:13:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: LTW Flywheel Well, it appears that there are a few choices to consider when purchasing a LTW flywheel. AA says they manufacture their own flywheel. Turner motorsport says their LTW flywheel weighs 11 pounds. TCKline says their flywheel weighs 12 lbs. Hmmm... So... TCKline $585 AA $689 Turner $699 I know AA specifically says that their flywheel comes with the dowel pins are secured rather than pressed. Some listers have mentioned that others don't even have them and require machining to put them in. Does anyone have a definitive answer? Can all those who said that their LTW flywheel causes the tranny to chatter post which brand they have? If you don't have significant chatter, can you post that too (and I don't want to see the smart butt, "My stock flywheel doesn't rattle"!!!) =) Thanks, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #10. RE: [E36M3] lightweight flywheel on '95 M3 - from Matt Henson

Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 06:21:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] lightweight flywheel on '95 M3 I know that Nick has mentioned this before but it keeps coming up so... The clutch rattling is likely caused by switching from a Dual Mass Flywheel to the non-compliant LTW unit without changing the clutch disk to a traditional spring-centered unit. In other words, if you're gonna go LTW then you should get Sach's spring-centered disk. I don't seem to have the PN for the disk; I'm sure that Nick does. Another point is that if you don't use this disk then there will be a lot more shock and stress on the driveline when you dump the clutch or shift quickly. So no more complaining about the rattling, okay? -Matt --- Ron Katona <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> wrote: > Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 12:34:35 -0400 > From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> > Subject: RE: [E36M3] lightweight flywheel on '95 M3 > > Wayne Miller wrote: > > > 1) which flywheel (vendor) did you buy? > > > > I bought mine (a 12lb one) from TC Kline and paid > just under $600 > > delivered.
