Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 10:59:09 -0500 From: "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: LS brake zones... #2 is a threshold braking corner that made me nervous as well. Though I've never driven LS in a street car, aside from a few laps in a Barber Neon school car (no helmets = slow speeds, just to learn the track, etc), #2 was a fairly scarry corner in a barber formula dodge race car. You are on full throttle all the way until you go to full braking, all the while you see a wall ahead of you. mind you these are MANUAL brakes w/o ABS and require ALOT of brake pressure to stop. Corkscrew is not as scary, since it's uphill and you are just told to go to brake right at/before the crest. The compression of the hill helps you slow down. Should you not slow down enough, there is a little gravel pit there that is sure to slow you down. And if you slow down enough to miss the gravel pit and not enough to drive through the #8, you car always swap ends right *through* #8 (aka the corkscrew). Just as the entire run group is standing at the flag post and looking down. Ask me how I know ;-) BTW - a Penske CHAMP car driver died there a few years back, and because of that incident they extended the run-off room at the top of the hill. On the last session of the last day of our Skip Barber Racing school @ LS, a dude in my run group passed me, early apexed at #4, dropped two off, yanked the weel, and smacked the wall on the opposite side. I have some of it on tape... GMK '97 M3/4 (barber racing school @ LS; RA & BFR home track; www.motorsports-exchange.com )

Hi Dave, Just as a general note, you will be competitive. 1----IP is not that crowded, but you will (or should) be wheel to wheel with DM cars (E30 cars mid to max'd on rules prep)--at least theoretically, even if you prep the car to the middle of the rules. 2----If there is a large IP turnout, then you will need to absolutely MAX the rules to be competitive, all things being equal (driver, engine prep, suspension prep, brake prep, etc) I ran in IP last year with my 95 M3. This year, I just had to start an engine rebuild :-( , so I am considering the options of either putting the car back into IP (possibly HP because of weight-the car with me is under the IP minimum), or possibly running it in modified. The car will be 'under prepped' in modified, but I want to do some things that may put me in that class, so that I may be more competitive at some of the local non BMW CCA CR events (POC, COMMA, etc). The fit is excellent, the quality is excellent. No problems with tire-rubbing, everything just works. No noise, no harshness. As you can tell, I am totally happy with this suspension. I figure for a race car it may be too soft, but my car is a daily driver + autoXer. > Thanks! > > S > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! We have sunny, mid 80 degree days coming up this weekend, all the electricity we can use (and don't have to pay an arm and leg for it), plenty of water, and I can't recall the last time I heard of anyone getting rear ended by someone running from the Cops. Oh well, we still have to live down the fact that Jesse Helms is from here. For me it was the PERFECT solution - I wanted a high performace road car that I could autocross and occasionally track but not have to spend every weekend on maintenance. I had been there - done that with Lotuses for many years. | | X Yes _ No | | Did you modify the set-up? If so how? | I have experimented with the Koni settings and the swaybar settings. | How is the street performance? | Absolutely awesome. The mountain twisties are a piece of cake. The wife thinks the ride is too harsh though. | How is the track performance? It passes Porsches on Laguna Seca | | How is the autocross performance? At monthly events I am frequently able to beat well prepared Corvettes. I think I could always beat them if I would set the front camber to -2.5 degrees (currently at 1.7 degrees). | | Do you feel your Dinan suspension provides a good balance between | comfort and performance? More leaning toward performance that comfort. | | Thanks! | | S
