#4. suppressing LTW flywheel noises - from Alan Taur
Top
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 21:27:27 -0700 From: "Alan Taur" <alantaur@yahoo.com> Subject: suppressing LTW flywheel noises Hey, guys. Just wanted to share my experience with my lightweight flywheel, or rather the taming of the lightweight flywheel. As you all know, switching to the aluminum flywheel does incredible things to acceleration, and unfortunately, to driveline NVH as well. It's hard to love a car that makes such horrible noises while in neutral, especially when your A/C, headlights, and radio are on. I get more untoward glances now than when I had a banshee named Mintex riding with my car. The solution? Well, short of ponying up for a stock dual-mass unit, there's not a lot of hope out there. But, I remained undeterred and I've somehow managed to quell about 90% of the rattle by switching tranny fluids. I progressively climbed the Red Line ladder of viscosity until I reached the Heavy Shock-Proof Gear Oil. I had used, in increasing levels of success, MT-90 and 80W140 hypoid gear oil. (There's nothing actually crazy about changing the transmission fluid 3 times in 24 hours, right? I'm sure you guys understand.) The Shock-Proof Gear Oil has returned much of the love I had for my baby. Cold shifting is marginally more difficult, but nowhere near troublesome. Now I'm waiting for a new Jim C chip to arrive that has the idle speed bumped up by 100 rpm. That'll teach my tranny to shut up. I'll let you guys (and gals) know how it turns out. Peace out. -Alan Taur alantaur@yahoo.com www.alantaur.com (ahh, vanity...) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Not unless the fluid level gets low (i.e. doesn't register on the dip stick). Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#8. Rattle from shock tower - from Sean Ganess

Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 13:03:41 -0400 From: "Sean Ganess" <Sean.Ganess@lostcluster.net> Subject: Rattle from shock tower In the past few weeks, my '97 M3/4 seems to have developed a rattle coming from the driver's side rear shock tower. It's especially audible from the interior of the car when driving over concrete pavement (which is not as smooth as the asphalt roads around here). Is this a sign that the shock tower mounts are failing? Any recommendations on using standard BMW parts or aftermarket? Replace both? This car has a Dinan Stage 2 suspension in it.
