But I wonder if the tranny churning through the much thicker fluid isn't robbing enough power to negate the effect of the LTW flywheel? If so, then you've spent a lot of time and money for nothing... just a question. -- Ron Katona

I was having the front end rattle, even after tightning the sway bar links. I replaced them last weekend, and the rattle is gone. I also have a 97 M3/4, with less that 36K miles. If you still think it is the shock tower, check the 3 small bolts under the hood holding the strut in place, then see if the shock bolt is loose. It's especially audible from the interior of the car when driving over concrete pavement (which is not as smooth as the asphalt roads around here). Is this a sign that the shock tower mounts are failing? Any recommendations on using standard BMW parts or aftermarket? Replace both? This car has a Dinan Stage 2 suspension in it.

#3. Advice needed on caliper boot damage - from Vern Anderson

Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 20:18:32 -0400 From: Vern Anderson <VAnderson@IVW.com> Subject: Advice needed on caliper boot damage After a driver's ed event at VIR in Feb, I noticed that my right front caliper dust boot was badly torn (2" opening) and the caliper piston was showing initial corrosion. I know the damage wasn't there prior to the weekend as I had put track pads on the day before. I started the weekend with over 3/4 worth of PF90's but because VIR is pretty brutal on brakes, at the end of the weekend the pads were down under 1/4. I have heard (on the list actually, in a thread about the brake wear sensors) that BMW never wants the pads to get too low (under 1/4 for example) as it stretches the caliper boot too far and could cause damage. Not sure about that, or if the damage was caused by heat or debris. Anyway, the dealer replaced the entire right front caliper under warranty :) I closely checked and had them check the other three corners for similar damage and found none. Tonight, I was going to install my PF90's and track rotors again for an Easter weekend at Mid-Ohio when I noticed the left front dust boot starting to show damage, this time a small nick in the boot. The left rear caliper boot is also starting to show a few cracks. My question is, how much damage, if any, is acceptable for these caliper boots? The small nick on the left front caliper is about 1-2 mm long and the one on the left rear is only 1mm. I'm going to call BMW Monday morning and see if they can/will replace the left front and left rears, but I'm wondering if it is simply time for a brake rebuild. I don't want to skimp on safety and brakes, but I also don't want to replace/rebuild calipers needlessly. Anyone have any suggestions? Obviously, if BMW will replace them in a timely fashion, I'm going to let them do it. Any ideas? For reference, the car has 33,500 miles and about 15 track weekends on it. I may have been this lucky to get this far with the original calipers. Vern Anderson 98 M3/2

Excessive noise is the main concern I have. However, you are the first of about 8-10 responses I have received that has really said the noise is anywhere near unacceptable. Others have ranged from barely any more noise to a only little more only under certain conditions (A/C running at idle, light throttle at 2500rpm, etc.). Questions: - Which vendor did you buy from? - Do you have a '95 or '96+ M3? - Are you using the stock clutch? Thanks! Replace with either Ground Control or JT Design RSMs. Do both sides, when one goes the other is not far behind. I have the JT Design RSMs and am a satisfied customer ;-)) Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

My car (90k miles) has just developed a small clunk sound/feel on acceleration just as the clutch is fully engaging. It is a sublte clunk that my girlfriend can't even notice but I sure do!. Are there any bushing in the rear that hold the diff that normally wear out or break? Maybe a sloppy U-joint, if thats possible?. I am very worried that this could be the early signs of the diff ripping out of the floor pan which is big $$ to fix!. How can I check this out?. Any help or ideas would be great. TIA, Rob

Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 23:48:01 -0700 From: "Kit Wetzler" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: suspension comparisons hm... it's interesting. I had konis and H&Rs on my car and was totally happy with them, did a track event or two and was still happy... right up until the time I rode in a car with H&R coilovers. not only did it ride better but it was much more controlled. :) $1700 later, (well, minus what I got when I sold the Konis and H&Rs) I'm happier with the car. I'm not sure how much good subjective reports on a suspension are going to do if you haven't tried out other solutions. It might be valuable to try out other suspensions before you decide yay or ney if you're in the market... maybe a bunch of us bay area guys can get together and have a suspension comparo day? ;) -kit, wanting sway bars...

It's on the other side. The difference is that the TC Kline flywheel doesn't have the one bolt hole machined out to fit the dowel pin. I had mine machined out so the dowel pin will fit. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :) BTW, if anyone has the part number for the Sachs spring centered clutch, I'd love to hear it... -kit, getting a bit tired of flywheel rattle, but likes the added ooomph. :)
