I heard someone's setup with similar amped, stealthbox'ed, etc system as mine with the main difference being his MB Quart system vs. my a/d/s/ setup....my ears nearly bled! Then again, he said he was into old school rock and loved it. This is pretty typical. The braking heat from track use makes the rubber dust boot brittle, so it cracks and come out of its seat in the caliper. Then water and dust can get to the piston and caliper bore, not a good thing. The solution is to rebuild the caliper with a new dust boot and piston seal (they only come as a set). Your dealer is an idiot for replacing the entire caliper, but that's no problem for you ;) However the dealer's probably not enough of an idiot to either keep on replacing calipers or to continually rebuild them under warranty. You may want to learn how to do that yourself. Neil 96 M3

WD40 isn't one of the first things I would try to clean my hands with. I looked around (unofficialbmw.com, etc.) but didn't find much. It didn't come with much other than pulling the locking tabs and setting the horizontal vs vertical. What are my mounting options and where is the cable stashed? Thanks John

#9. Sniffin' Spark Plugs - from Steve Lilley
Top
Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 09:44:13 -0400 From: Steve Lilley <m3steve@earthlink.net> Subject: Sniffin' Spark Plugs I replaced my spark plugs for the first time this weekend (the car has almost 30K miles). Each plug looked fairly clean...no oil, soot, or other apparent damage. However, I noticed a strange acrid smell when I removed each spark plug and "sniffed" near the tip. Is this a normal smell, or is it a sign of a potential problem? I've never smelled anything like it before -- from past experiences, I would have expected a slight gas or oil smell. Of course, I usually change the plugs when the engine is still fairly hot, but this time I let the car sit overnight in the garage before swapping plugs. Maybe that's the big difference... I'm going to rebuild the calipers Wednesday night. The place I'm buying the rebuild kits from also has a complete front caliper in stock, so if we discover the caliper piston is damaged/corroded, I'll just replace the entire thing. I'll jut plan on doing this yearly (or more often if needed). Vern Anderson 98 M3/2
