Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: Re: Advice needed on caliper boot damage Since it was already explained that heat and elements take a toll on rubber boots, I'll skip it. However, before rebuilding it may be worth a shot to make the car's braking system "stock" and take it back to the dealer and have them replace the slightly torn boots. Yes, I can verify that they replace the caliper rather than rebuild. Why ? My SA explained that they do component level replacement, not rebuild/repair. Since my extended warranty covers caliper replacement, I figure I'll get the other three replaced sometime this summer/spring if your car is still fully covered, don't spend the dough on something that the dealer can do for free. Oh yes, you may want to take it to another dealer if you think it will raise a red flag at the same dealership. Just no aftermarket pads, etc. This *will* raise red flags. I don't remember having it prior to the replacement of the stock RSM's (which were fine) w/the JT design ones. It seems that there are a few people that have the same problem, please let us know what you find out. Swapping out the rear shock mounts didn't help. The old stock ones were fine and I replaced them with stock ones. Figure I'll have to do it again in 50k, but the installation was pretty easy. I'm ready to throw money at this problem. I know when I'm beat. To the mechanic we go. I'll update the list as to what it is. On another note, just got my Bentley! Talk about bed time reading, this thing is great! Jonathan Evans 95 M3 Raleigh

And that's with a air jack hammer thing. I wanted to say a word about those damn things. I had been putting off changing mine since I had heard it was a royal PIA to do. Well when I finally did them, sheesh, a piece of cake. Almost every write up I have seen had several steps too many. I have done 2 M3s now so I cant say all would be easy, but mine were. First undo the 3 bolts holding the front of the arm, where the bushing is at, take bolt out of arm and bushing. take saw and cut several holes in the rubber part of the bushing, then cut the metal sleeve of the bushing carefully with the saw. Not hard to do at all, just watch to make sure you are not cutting the arm. after you cut it, take hand and catch bushing falling out of the arm, then laugh and wonder why is was so easy. Then wonder what you might have done wrong too, haha. I used a short 2x4 and hammered the new bushing back in being careful to get it at the exact same depth as the old bushing. It took maybe 2 mins. repeat for other side. spent a total of 1.5 maybe 2 hrs with several minutes on the phone with GF. not the big ordeal that some folks claim. I also undid the brake line holder but I dont think I even needed to do that either. YMMV. 6 hrs seems like a lot for that job. I did this on the floor in my garage, with a lift, I think it could be done in 1 hr. Mike

You will definitely need those ear plugs! I lucked out last year and got to go to the USGP in Indy. And thanks to my next door neighbor, I even got into the Mclaren suites and sat right above Mika's garage on qualifying day. Awesome trip.

#10. [e36][m3] PF90 vs PF93 vs R4 ? - from George M. Kofman

Folks; I've been running PF90 pads for track/street applications for a while, and am finally out of my "stash." So now I need to get more pads. Is PF90 still "king of the hill," or are there other compounds worth trying ? I really liked PF90's ability to stop without fading, lap after lap. And what stopping ability it is ! So, a recommendation is most welcome ! Please CC: sdg2@execpc.com when replying directly to the digest.
