Yes, Peter, this does indeed seem to be the way it works.....When I first considered it, I thought it made sense that the vents should used their Scoop advantage to Scoop into the oncoming air, ie, to bite into it, and force it through the rotors, in the way a paddle wheel 'scoops' into the water.... But clearly, this is NOT how it works....Instead, they follow the scheme of gas slots, where the air is forced centrifugally from the inside center out the tops of the vents....Live and Loin! _____________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <30000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio -----Original Message----- From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> To: Paul Elliott <pelliott@rcn.com>; E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Date: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 10:03 PM Subject: Re: [E36M3] Which direction do your rotor vents go? >on 4/11/01 5:29 PM, Paul Elliott at pelliott@rcn.com wrote: > >> However, when I picked up my car, I found that the vents were facing >> Backwards which at first I thought was a mistake, since I couldnt see how >> the air could possibly enter the rotors this way... > >I'm a creative guy, not by any stretch of the imagination an engineer, but >having the vents "backwards" seems to make sense. > >Airflow starts at the center of the rotors, with centrifugal force spinning >the air outwards. I've found a used one for $400. Any installation / quality / volume concerns? Thanks, Chris soon to be louder - 99 M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #5. new brakes installed - review (long) - from NickG
Top
Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 23:05:43 -0500 From: "NickG" <nikog@MediaOne.net> Subject: new brakes installed - review (long) Last week I installed new brakes (using OEM replacement parts) on my '95 M3. All I can say is WOW! So that's what an M3 is suppose to brake like! Some background..... A couple years ago I changed the rotors and pads all around: Euro front rotors, new stock BMW rear rotors, and PBR Deluxe pads all around. The braking was alright, but the pads squealled like crazy. I installed some anti-squeal shims on the pads, and that took care of the noise (for the moment). After a few months, I realized that the braking really wasn't that good. Pedal travel was long, and the brakes really didn't grab all that well. So, I decided to reinstall some stock Jurid pads up front (keeping the Deluxe rear pads). Braking was better, but shortly thereafter, the front rotors warped. I couldn't believe it; Euro floating rotors warping on a street driven car?? Never heard of that...Plus, the rear pads started squealling again when cold. So I finally got around to redoing the brakes again. This time, I installed Brembo stock replacement front rotors, kept the current rear rotors (they looked unused, more on that later), and used Pagid OEM replacement pads all around. The brakes are now awesome for a street car. Very responsive, excellent grip, short pedal travel, and no squeal whatsoever. Now this is what an M3 is suppose to brake like. It has enough force to make you dizzy during maximum 60-0mph braking! Some observations: a) PBR Deluxe pads DO NOT belong on an M3. No way, no how! b) brake dust - the Pagid pads dust less than the stock Jurids, but more than the Deluxes. Overall, a good compromise. c) the Brembo rotors were DEAD PERFECT as far as runout is concerned. My micrometer didn't even move .001" when I measured them. d) do not mix pad compounds front and rear unless you know what you're doing (I obviously didn't). The reason I didn't change my rear rotors this time was because, even after 2 years, they still looked like new. They had no wear at all, not even shiny. Actually, that's what was strange. The rotors always had a dull look to them. I realized that the rear brakes really weren't doing anything, and the fronts were doing all the braking; that must have been why the floating front rotors warped. I attribute it to using grippy front pads (the Jurids) and crappy rear pads (the Deluxe). Overall, I give these components 2 thumbs up. The Brembo rotors appear to be excellent quality pieces, and the Pagid pads perform great on the street (track and autocross I don't know though). Nick '95 M3 turbo

This was more useful two weeks ago before San Diego's event. (Yes Kit, I'm stealing these from recent messages on the trackracers mailing list.) Nothing new from me on this topic; I haven't driven Buttonwillow clockwise since March of 2000. Anyone have other links to add to the collection?
