This is a great opportunity to ride on other people’s M3s with different suspension setup and help you decide which setup is suitable for your own M3 and after that maybe we can go for a drive to some nice curvy road in the area. email me at e36driver@yahoo.com if you are interested in joining us and I’ll keep you updated. #6. E46 M3 test drive - from Ben Liaw

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 08:00:19 -0700 From: "Ben Liaw" <ben@shortshifter.com> Subject: E46 M3 test drive i'm sure many more will post as they have their experience, but i thought i'd throw in my $0.02. in no particular order... - car is too quiet, like the E39 M5. - for real fun, the DSC, ASC need to be turned off and the "sport" button needs to be turned on. - 3.64 gear in diff is fun...i may have to do this in the GT. - having 6-speeds still takes getting used to. - car is comfortable, yet reponsive when pushed. i couldn't experience first hand the "understeer" which the journalists spoke about since they were probably beating on the press cars. i have more respect for property than that. - laguna seca blue is interesting. paint the roof white and you have a rolling smurf. - grey interior sucks. seats are so-so, black trim looks cheap. E46 330 Cis have better looking interiors. - shifter (while shorter than other BMWs) has WAY too much play. notchey, difficult to engage into gear (car had 240 miles), sloppy. - engine bay is a work of art...in plastic. - steering wheel is nice. - motor? likes to rev, thanks in part to many factory built-in items (like a already lightened pulley from the factory) and other small details. makes it's most power over 4000 when it really kicks. is it fast? yes. is it nice? yes. is it worth $52k? perhaps. the big question...should you sell the E36 M3 for the E46 M3? unless you need the new body style and need the extra 100 hp, no. with proven and simple mods, you can make your E36 M3 close in "feel" to the new E46 M3. i'm glad i have my E36 M3 GT. i wouldn't trade it for an E46 M3 even if it were for an even swap. ben liaw

#9. Worn Wheel Bearings - from Steve D'Gerolamo

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 10:20:54 -0400 From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <steved3@idt.net> Subject: Worn Wheel Bearings Anyway, the job did indeed get rid of the shimmy. What was strange was that my Dealer, when I had them measure the rotors for runout a few weeks ago, claimed they were in spec. He said he felt what was happening was that when cool, as when they measured, they were indeed spec. But , under braking, they probably developed their warpage pattern, causing the shimmy ======================================================= Sounds like a possible worn wheel bearing. Hub/bearing runout will increase with load and temperature. Runout of .002" at the hub can extrapolate to .006" at the outer circumference of your disk. You will feel this in the pedal. Measure the runout cold on both sides. Go do some hard high speed stops until the shimmy recurs. Now measure (carefully) the runout of both sides hot to determine where the problem is. If you feel it in the pedal, you will see it on the dial indicator. SD ================================== Steve D'Gerolamo - The Ultimate Garage - Tel 201-262-0412
