#1. Tire and wheel survey - from Jeff Stowe
Top
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 11:43:50 -0700 From: Jeff Stowe <jrstowe@pacbell.net> Subject: Tire and wheel survey All, It seems there are always questions about tire and wheel sizing. I was thinking it may help if there was a compiled reference source for this info. I would be happy to collect the data from every one and put it all into a spreadsheet and then perhaps Suzy would be willing to post it to her site. If this sounds at all valuable, please repond with the information below. I have included my set up as an example. If I am forgetting something important please add that info as well. Please respond directly to Mcarjeff@pacbell.net so as not to clutter up the digest. thanks Jeff M3 Wheel and Tire Reference **************************************************************************** ********************** Car ======================================= Coupe/ Type of Fenders Year Sedan Springs Rolled Comments ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- 98 Sedan H&R Sport No ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Wheels ========================================================================= Stre Brand Model Width Diameter Offset Weight Spacers Comments (fitment issues, quality, etc.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Street BMW M-Contour 7.5F/8.5R 17 ?? ?? No dealer would EVER take it in trade. Used, you car may be worth less than a stock E36! - Still unresolved issues about the longevity of Euro motors on the US's high-sulfur gas. - There are no guarantees that you'll pass local emissions tests (it should, but what do you do if it fails?), and CA inspectors are sure to fail you on visual inspection. A lot of people do not have the know how to properly do the conversion in their cars. So they are going to pay a shop to do this. So you can figure they will charge at the minimum 50hrs to do the conversion and it will probably take longer than that if it is going in a street car. So you are looking at $60-$70/hr times however long it takes. My car took about 45-50hrs to do and it does not have any emissions or A/C. It will take longer with these were added. Okay and then there is the parts you will need. My motor was fairly complete so there was not too many parts I needed to add. I think I spent about $2k in parts but half of that was for some replacement stuff like LTW flywheel and new clutch. So all in all you are looking at the price of the motor again in labor and parts. >- Not easily serviced in US (dealers may not have the service/parts CDs, or >just refuse). If somebody is going to do this to there car, chances are they are not going to use a dealer. I know I haven't used one in the last two years. But that might be since my warranty ran out. >- No warranty Gone. >- Harder to sell than a supercharged motor (you may have to get a liability >waiver, since "technically" this car is neither EPA nor DOT certified, and >therefore illegal on the street). No dealer would EVER take it in trade. >Used, you car may be worth less than a stock E36! Don't know yet but I hope I don't ever have to sell mine. Anybody want to buy it? Just kidding. >- Still unresolved issues about the longevity of Euro motors on the US's >high-sulfur gas. Now you tell me. Thanks a lot. What was the deal with this again? >- There are no guarantees that you'll pass local emissions tests (it should, >but what do you do if it fails?), and CA inspectors are sure to fail you on >visual inspection. > >Dan S. Now the question I keep asking myself and keep hearing is was it worth it. You bet it was. I love my car now. Remember how everybody talks about how the E30 was a great car and how the E36 does not compare in the fun factor category. Well it now does. This is how they were supposed to be made. I would do it again and I think it was worth the money. But that is my crazy opinion too. Seth Thomas www.m3ltw.com

The first marker starts picking up at about 155F and the middle marker does not pick up until around 170-175F. Then it will stay in the middle until somewhere around 215F. Then it will not go past the third mark at around 225F. Too late if you are not paying attention or for the average driver. I wish that I could help with the gauge and what sending unit I have but mine came in the car when I bought it. So I don't know anything about it except that it has a VDO Water Temp gauge. Sorry.
