Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 06:51:37 -0500 From: "Steven Hazard" <98m3@mediaone.net> Subject: Re:O2 Sensor Kaput... Roy, there are 4 O2 Sensors(HEGO's) on a OBDII M3..Two in front of the cats and two just downstream of the cats. Someone else can chime in if I'm posting wrong, but I beleive the two O2's in front of the cats will effect driveablity if either of them fails on you. The two downstream will still throw an Check Engine light, but should not effect driveability. Those two are simply for the OBDII Emissons sampling loop. I always carry a spare O2 Sensor in case I throw a light, or my 98 acts up. I would'nt want a O2 ruining a day at the track, or Autocross..... Sometimes a O2 Sensor can be just about gone, effect driveability but not throw an engine light. On my previous three cars (all SHO's) you could spin one out and check the color of the sensor to see how it was doing....Anyone on the board know if this would work on our M3's???? If yes what color is a new sensor, and what color change(if any) would a bad sensor look like? On my 98 I had to replace a downstream hego at 18K....I now have 60K and have not changed any others....I just know one is going to go soon..... Regards, Steve Subject: O2 Sensor Kaput... Well, there is coincidence and then there is coincidence. After bringing my brother's M Coupe to the dealer to have the "Check Engine" light diagnosed, I found out that his O2 sensor requires replacement. Lo and behold, this afternoon, the idiot light on my M3 also lit up and it feels just like my brother's car now, so I guess I'll have to call the dealer and ask them to order a SECOND O2 sensor for my car. Apparently this is a common occurrence, can any digesters comment on that? My girlfriend has a '00 328i, did they change the O2 sensor in the E46 or should we be expecting the same problem some time in the future? By the way, both of our M cars are '99 and mine has about 44,000 miles on it while my brother's car has under 30,000 miles on the odometer. I just hope the ordered sensors come in before the driving school this weekend!!

The car felt much more neutral this time than last - I ran pressures in the upper 30's in the front for the previous event and the car felt horrible. With the suggested pressures, it felt like I was driving my own car again. :-) It's amazing what a difference R compound tires make. Even with my 245/40 KDs all around, my car never turned in like it did on Saturday. I was also surprised at the abrupt transition from gripping to sliding that the Kumhos had. I felt like I was just a little behind the car once it started drifting. It'll definitely take some getting used to, especially as temperatures rise into the 80's here in New Jersey. Thanks again, Dave

#5. FS - Schroth Profi II Harness Set - from Ned Coonen
Top
Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 10:54:31 -0500 From: "Ned Coonen" <ncoonen@hotmail.com> Subject: FS - Schroth Profi II Harness Set I have a red Profi II harness set (drivers side) for sale that was just removed from my '98 M3/2 after one season. This is the FIA certified four point setup that uses a 2" lapbelt and 3" shoulder belts. It is designed to be used with the stock seatbelt mount points for the lap belt. This is an easy bolt-in installation but requires either a harness bar or roll bar for the shoulder belts. See the Profi II - FE asm at http://www.schroth.com/english/e2a2.htm for more details. This is an excellent upgrade for those still using Rallye 4 belts with a rollbar. The belts are clean and absolutely undamaged. Only careful inspection would indicate they are used. I will include a set of unused Schroth shoulder belt pads. The whole set is $125 shipped to you via UPS ground. (48 continental states only) Thanks...ned. '98 M3 '88 M5 x 2

Only got its distinctive "bleep" a couple times in SF Bay Area driving, but the thing drove me nuts in the desert between Bakersfield and Las Vegas--my guess is some military stuff. However, twice on a visit to Az last month, I was aimed at directly by troopers with hand-helds and got no warnings at all. Fortunately, I was abnormally below the local limit those times. Anyone know of some as yet "secret" bands the V1 can't denote? Dennis __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! I also believe that they are usually aimed at the headlights or license plate (both highly reflective) so I am not surprised that the V1 wouldn't make a peep if the gun was pointed at the headlight. Of course, if you are in an area with much of the local enforcement using laser, you should be checking out the Blinder M-10 laser jammer. I have one on my M3 but there aren't many laser guns in NJ so I can't say for sure if it works or not. I have had testimony from close friends that it does. It is NOT illegal to have a laser jammer (as opposed to a radar jammer which IS illegal) and I built it right into the grill so most people have no idea what it is, if they even notice. The instructions even say that when it is set off, you do have to slow down because it doesn't make you invisible but it does give time to "adjust" your speed and shut it off to not arouse suspicion. Another V1 data point is that you can test it by aiming the detector at a red neon sign. This should set it off (and works for mine and my M-10) according to the nice people over at Valentine. -Wayne

Tom, I've had RE730 for about 5K miles. No noise to speak off. Compared to MXX3's, they are a bit softer, much quieter, an order of magnitude better on wet and a little underwhelming on dry. Surprisingly, I was about a second faster at the last autoX with RE730's on during fun runs then I was with year old A032's on during the timed runs. But that's probably an aberration. All in all, RE730's will probably be perfect for my wife's 328i, but I will keep an eye out for S02/03's next time around. YMMV, alex f > >2) Front tire wear: I am finding out that my front tires > >(Bridgestone RE730s) are wearing at a much faster rate than > >my rears. Is this attributable to auto-Xing.
