I knew Al (the owner) during my SCCA road race days in the 80's and have always found the shop to be fair and honest. They will recommend what things REALLY need to be done and which are just fluff. Another thing that sets off the V1 laser detector - drive toward the sun at dawn or sunset and hit the windshield sprayers. The droplets seem to diffract enough bright sunlight into the detector. #5. Shims For Camber - from Eric Fesler
Top
Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 15:05:57 -0700 From: "Eric Fesler" <Robert.Eric.Fesler@nsc.com> Subject: Shims For Camber Does anyone know the size of the shims and bolts for the camber adjustment? Steve D did not know the size (thought 12mm). I guess I would need bolt length and diameter and thread pitch as well as apropriate washer thickness for ~2-2.25 degrees of negative camber. Anyone know why Korman's (I was unable to get them on the phone) webpage says for lowered cars only on their camber bolt adjustment kit? Cheers, Eric

#6. Re: 0W30 synthetic oil question - from Wen Liew

Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 15:34:17 -0700 From: "Wen Liew" <wwliew@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: 0W30 synthetic oil question Here are some comments I got against using 0W30 in OHC engines at temps above 68F. So, is "30" the problem or are the newer "30"s different? Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-30 I would be very careful about using 0W30 in overhead cam engines at ambient temperatures of 68 deg F or above because of several tidbits of information I have gathered over the years: 1. The US requires manufacturers to post the same weight oil that is used for gas mileage testing aspart of their "recommended" oils. 2. Up until recently, US grade oils including Mobil 1 synthetics did not pass strict Japanese and European oil requirements (GM apparently lobbied against such requirements in the US) 3. Mercedes Benz has always recommended only 40 weight oils or higher for ambient temp greater than 68 deg F, except for "fuel saving oils" which may be their way of following the US requirements. I don't know if the newer 30 weight synthetics have been improved enough for the kind of engineprotection needed for the long haul. 4. Porsche 993's seem to need new camshafts early in cars using synthetic. A well regarded engine mechanic in the Seattle area has found this. I believe most of the folks used 30 weight syntheticsin their cars since those are the most common. 5. The only original equipment oils (put in at the factory) I have heard of found in Porsche or Mercedes cars is 5W40 or 0W40 synthetic or regular dino oil. Recent Corvettes used 5W30 synthetic but they are not overhead cam. I believe BMW uses a 40 weight synthetic also from what I've heard. Unless you live in a cold area of the country, I would be careful to use a heavier weight oil. The heavier oil may be necessary to protect overhead cams and to be a better heat sink when running hot. I believe the 0W helps startup, engine response, and gas mileage even though the oil is a 40 weight and have found this to be true in my cars. I don't believe in short drainage intervals when using synthetic oils since there is very little oil breakdown and synthetics require fewer viscosity improving additives. I also use synthetics for cars that are used for short trips in humid climates since they absorb water better than dino oils and are less prone to acid breakdown. Oil becomes more acidic temporarily during warm-up. There is probably more gasoline mixing with oil in engines that are used for short trips.
99 ML320' 88 Carrera 3.2 MIT '77 "Wen Liew" <wwliew@hotmail.com> wrote: I noticed, unscientifically, that the engine revs faster. For the last 30k miles, I've changed oil at the FSS intervals and the dealer probably used dino juice. This time, I decided to change the oil at every 5,000 miles and go with synthetic, like I normally do on all my other cars. I also decided to give the 0W-30 oil a try. Many BMW owners recommend and have tried Amsoil ($8/qt), Redline ($7/qt) and Mobil 1 ($4.49/qt) with much claimed success. Mobil 1 is widely available while the other two are not and MBZ and AMG recommend it. Being lighter, 0W oils are supposed to provide better engine protection at start-ups. On my M3, I was hitting the rev-limiter more than I usually do with no change in driving habits after switching from BMW OEM Synthetic 5W-40 to Mobil 1 0W-30. As usual, your mileage may vary... Wen P.S. FWIW, the oil change triggered the FSS to increase by 1200 miles since the quality of the oil has "improved". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

The wheels look great and are a teeny bit easier to clean than the ten doublespokes. DB (soon to be sold M3/4 ("sob!") After wrapping 245/40/17 Hoosiers, clearance is an issue (hence the spacer solution). I will be hitting the track day after (and am short for time :)and wanted to know if it worked with these wheels before I over nighted it (and then realize it doesent work). Other option is to get the Dinan ones. Comments/suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Ahmad __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 16:08:32 -0700 From: Roman <roman@arteuro.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] E46 M3 test drive report 276 Hi All, Last week I had a chance to drop by SF BMW for some parts for my E36 M3. As I entered the showroom, I saw a Smurf Blue 2001 M3. First time I had seen one in person and it really is a beautiful car. After close inspection of the car(outside only, it was locked), I looked at the sticker price which made my eyeballs come out of their sockets. Sticker price $50k + change, selling price $65k. I asked the sales person if they would offer a test drive for a potential buyer. "You buy the car, and test drive it home" was the response (was that a sarcastic remark? :p). Actually, I'm sorta glad that she didn't let me test drive the car. I might have loved it so much that I would have lost my mind and paid the additional $15k for nothing. I think I'll let other people with more $$$ give their first impressions of the new M3. For now I'm more than satisfied with my E36 M3 :)) Cheers, Roman S. 96 ///M3 38K and enjoying life on the street and auto-x!!!
