With 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rear MXX3 tires, I used 38 front and 34 rear (cold pressure). This seemed to dial out a lot of understeer. YMMV since you've got taller sidewalls and the 323i may have a bit more understeer dialed into its suspension. Try marking the sidewalls with white chalk or shoe polish prior to your first session, adjust pressure before your 2nd, and enjoy the rest of the day! Have fun! I'm taking my 323i to Lime Rock this Saturday. Yesterday I put on a new set of 16" Michelin Pilot SX MXX3s. Do you guys familar with the MXX3s have any recommendations for tire pressures at the track? Since I've only got one day at Lime Rock, I want to have the car as sorted out as possible when I get there! Thanks, Steve m3steve@earthlink.net

It was Imola Red and cut me off coming out of a 7-11 on Coney Island Avenue before the highway. I didn't realize the new E46M3 had those glow rings in the headlights. At the next exit, I thought that a new 5 series had followed me off...it was him. Oh well. He didn't want to play. They gave a toot-toot in recognition. I agree, the color is strong, but gives a good eye jolt when at speed. The color somewhat reminds me of those old Porsche 911 commercials where Hans the designer wears funky colored argyle socks. . . tom eby 96 m3 74 02 -- >-------------------- 1 -------------------- >Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 18:54:10 -0800 >From: D Seeley <dseeley@infoasis.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] E46 M3 - my 1st street sighting > >Monday 11am in Milpitas on Dixon Landing Road. I have a lot of Yakima parts, so I was hoping to be able to use some of them on my M3/2, but I was disappointed to find out that they quit making the clips to fit the coupe. Even if you find the clips, they go with the older tower design. There is a place that my local Yakima shop led me to that stocks obsolete Yakima parts and might have the right clips, but I can't remember the name or number. Your local shop might have the connection. If you're lucky, you already have the old tower design, and just need to find the right clips. Also, with the coupe, you need to mount the bars very close together (I think both sets of clips attach above the front side windows). This makes it much more difficult to quickly install and remove the rack. That's why I quit looking. I don't think you'll have any luck trying to use the sedan clips because the side windows are so different. The sedan has a frame around the window while the coupe has no frame. I recently got a sedan, so my quest for easily removable bike racks for my M3 can resume. On Yakima in general, other than changing tower systems regularly (the new systems are an improvement), the racks are as good as they get. -Chris 95 M3/2 98 M3/4 >Is anyone using a roof rack on the M3? #6. Questions about brakes and tire balance (Long) - from Steve Tom

Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 10:03:07 -0700 From: Steve Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> Subject: Questions about brakes and tire balance (Long) When I bought my 96 M3 w 37k on the clock a year ago I never had a problem with the brakes, stock pads, stock rotors. When my car had about 42k miles it was time to replace rotors and brakes. I went to OEM Brembo and EBC greens. I warped the rotors within a few hundred miles. I dealt with this for a little while but got fed up and went to euro floaters. Warped those in about 500 miles. hmmm pretty pissed. The questions are; 1. Are the pads causing the warping? Is it the retention of heat in the pads or how fast the pad generates heat that would cause this? 2. I'm looking at replacing the rotors and pads again. I would like to go back to Pagids (which I hear are the stock pads) or the Pagid Sports. What is the difference between Pagid stock and Pagid Sport? What's a good place to buy the Brembo's? With all of this going on I also have a tire balance problem. I went from using Michelin MXX3's to BFG KD's. I can not get the KD's to balance at all. I've been to two different shops 3 times each. They truly love me now. I've never had a problem with my Michelin's. I balance them on the inside of the rim only, in both outside and inside of the rim. I know from the factory they put weights on the outside but I think this is ugly. Has anyone else had balance problems. I believe the KD's and Michelins are made in the same plant so quality should be similar. I have a friend that works as a Toyo rep and he says to spin the rim only and find the heavy spot (usually the valve stem area) Then match the dot on the tire (the light spot) with the specific heavy part of the rim. Does anyone else make them do this. Or do you just put the dot of the tire near the valve stem? With all this said I'm going to go get my bushings checked out to see if this is some of the problems of vibration. steve 96 M3 stock

If so, contact me off the list. You can drive me around for lunch tomorrow and I'll observe your braking technique. :) Then if that isn't the problem, we'll find you a shop that knows what it's doing. Eat them yourself.<< With all due respect to all those involved in this thread, it is rather well known that the Repco/PBR/Axis line of Deluxe pads as manufactured in Australia do contain Asbestos. So far as I know, they are the only widely sold brand in the aftermarket which still uses it. But use it they do, and have, for many years. Paul Elliott So does this mean that I am taking a health risk if I do it myself? Do Jurid pads have asbestos in them? Are only some form s of asbestos harmful? I don't want any health regrets 20 years form now. Eric 95 ///M3

It is my belief that Axxis changed formulas on most if not all of their pads in mid to late 2000 to remove asbestos. There is almost no possibility of a health risk in any case. Wear latex gloves to protect yourself from the brake cleaner and anti-squeel. Put the old pads in the box the new ones came from and throw them out. OSHA lives for this kind of crap. If there was a danger the tree huggers would have stopped the earth's orbit by now to correct it. You have four main health hazards when working on brakes. Dropping the car on yourself, hurting yourself with the tools, breathing the fumes or splashing brake cleaner in your eyes and not pumping the brake pedal up after replacing pads and crashing into something on your first post-replacement drive. I've heard many reports of the EBC Greens being no good for E36 applications. Many people have warped rotors on the street with these pads and, I believe, EBC even put out some sort of bulleting where they no longer recommended this one for the E36.
