Chester, I definitely agree as to the durability of the pf90's, if I just didn't sound like a school bus as I approach stop signs with light pedal pressure, lol. I've put about 10k street miles on them as well as a Friday at the track day around the main course at summit point, and two autocrosses at the beginning of this season. Had the wheels off doing a post auto-x inspection and the pads still look great. I also agree they have been very friendly on the rotors. The only problem I occasionally have is excess pad material bedding on the rotor from street use. But that has only occurred twice and will go away after a some higher effort braking is performed... btw I am still waiting for my next track day at summit. I'll be in the advanced fatt group this time around, but I will be attending with some of my buddies who will be in the novice class, so I have to wait until the 6th of July because of the waitlist. Luckily my first ncc autocross season is keeping me entertained in the meantime =) Jeremy- -----Original Message----- From: Chester Wong [mailto:chester_p_wong@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2001 9:36 PM To: Jeremy Warfield; E36M3 Subject: RE: [E36M3] Screeching/Grinding Brake noise, but pads seem to have 60% left. I agree. Last year, I bought a set of new PF-90s. I went to my first driver school at Ofest and didn't really use the brakes all that hard (wasn't pushing it and instructor wasn't very communicative). So the pads made the typical PF-90 noise and that was about it. They also dusted nice and black. =) I never did experience the pulsating brakes or anything like that. Well, I just got back from the driver school at Summit Point this past weekend. Slapped the PF-90s on again and had a much better time. Thanks goes out to the NJ chapter for setting up this event. It seems that the NJ chapter has more to offer than the NY one... Anyway, I had a blast and really learned a lot on the Jefferson circuit (you don't go too fast and you learn a lot about smoothness and driving the line). I started pushing harder and harder and started hearing the tires sing and the PF-90s scream. I also started feeling the pulsating in the brakes (very slight pulsations). Not sure how much pad I used (the PF-90s are awesome...seem to last pretty long and aren't too hard on the rotors), but I can definitely hear a clunk when tapping the brakes going 2 - 5 mph. There now is some play between caliper, pad, and rotor so you hear the pad shift around. Also, last night while driving around my neighorhood, my car started making those nasty high pitched NYC taxi cab sounds when slowing down. I checked the pads from the outside (haven't had a chance to clean the car and put it back into street form) and they seemed fine. My -96 M3/4 3.2 has a MK Motorsport chassie which is extremely stiff in the front and way softer in the back. I run 245 PZero-C all around on 8,5x18. With stock wheel alignment it understeered slightly in slower to mid speed corners but actually got a bit nervous in the back at high speed corners. There's no added aerodynamics on the car... Then I did the strut mount swap in the front to add more camber. Now the car has tremendous bite in turn in, no understeer at all if not pushed way way to hard. The car actually lifts the inner front wheel in turns... but gorgeously balanced all the same. MK did a good job! The only downside is some wearing of the inner edge of the front wheel LEAST busy on the track, the one mostly in the air! So, I'm more than surprised hearing about your problems. Do you have stock shocks and springs? What are the sway bars? To me it sounds you must have front/rear swaybars not matched to one another. Or mismatched front and rear shocks/springs. Very odd indeed. They like (REQUIRE) 3-4 degrees! When you toasted your tire, was the wear greatest on the inside? 2) Get a tire pyrometer (or borrow one). This is critical to adjusting both camber and tire pressure. The guy who recommended 45 is smoking crack. That is a good HOT temp, (I try for 43) but not a cold temp. I start out (cold) at 35/33 front/rear. 3) Enter the corner slower. You may (note the word "may") be entering too hot, in which case ANY tire will understeer. OR, try using a little trailbraking to help turn-in. (I assume no liability for your spin/crash for this advice, however, as trailbraking is an advanced skill) 4) Check your toe. Toe is critical to turn-in. My front toe is actually set OUT (1/16") with the rear at 1/8" IN. This is more unstable at high speeds (car likes to weave spontaneously, and will climb ruts), but is great for a race car. #6. GRM Tunnell Article and Dreaded Understeer - from Ron Katona
Top
Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 23:16:48 -0400 From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> Subject: GRM Tunnell Article and Dreaded Understeer So speaking of the dreaded understeer and car setup vs. driver ability, has anyone read the "Sultans of Solo" article in the June Grass Roots Motorsports? I think some of you will find it interesting to know that a 10 time national championship M3 runs on 505 lb front springs with 390 lb rears. It also runs <gasp> RD Sport sways at both ends with the front set to the middle and the rear set to full soft. I'm surprised the car can even turn <g>. It's also interesting that Bob seems to be moving towards a stiffer front end and a softer rear. If you've followed his web site and some posts here you'd notice that he went from 450 lb springs all 'round to 505 lb, and now to the 505f-390r setup. That along with the sway bar setup should make the car push even with the camber he's running. However... putting the power down early is a key to going fast with an M3 in Solo competition and it looks like Bob feels the softer rear is much better in this regard. That's probably even more important with his move toward shorter gearing. I'd love to hear his thoughts on this evolution in setup and how the car must be driven to compensate for it's apparent imbalance in front to rear stiffness. I was a bit surprised at the alignment info: 3.5 front and 2.0 rear camber; seems like a lot for an M3 up front. I have the same Kline camber plates and it would be difficult to get more than 3.0 degrees up front. Even that setting would require the sacrifice of a couple degrees of caster in order to center the strut nut in the strut tower hole to maximize the range of camber adjustment. I wonder if this is a misprint or if Bob is running an additional camber correction device (like bolts or shims) along with the plates. It also seems like a lot of camber for 245 width tires (narrow by SP standards). I'd really like to hear Bob's thought on this. Also, <gasp again> no strut tower brace! Solo-II is a bizarre world for car setup with a premium on transitional response and power application. The faster you can get the to change direction and get back on the gas, the faster you'll be. Bob's setup isn't going to be the best for a street/track/autocross car for most of us. Still, I think it points out that NO imbalance in a car's setup can't be compensated for by altering your driving style - most of our cars are set up with far better balance in terms of spring rates and sway bar settings than Bob's car. He's gone "outside the box" in order to get a jump on the competition, but it shows what can be done when you drive the car with it's strengths and weaknesses in mind instead of trying to force the car to adapt to your driving style... not a knock on anyone's driving, just an observation on how a successful racer is getting it done and what we can learn from that. -- Ron Katona

Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 22:37:23 -0700 From: "Lew Becker" <lmbeckercfls@earthlink.net> Subject: JTD Rear Shock Tower Brace When I ordered my RSM's from JTD last year, I mentioned to Jim Mihal how great I thought his front strut brace was and asked whether he offered a matching rear brace. He didn't, but was thinking about it. I spoke Jim again yesterday (ordering STN Rings) and asked about the rear brace. Jim mentioned that he received a flurry of calls from Listers last week (when this was a "hot" topic), and some urging advised that he could and would offer a rear brace that matches the front if there were at least 20 buyers -- the only issue relates to whether there's a need for a quick release feature (that will facilitate loading large objects in the trunk with rear seats folded down; but will complicate design and manufacture, and add cost), and price (Jim estimated something between $200 and $250). I don't know that I want to coordinate a group buy personally (although, I might -- I'd sure like to get a brace between the rear shock towers that matches my JTD front strut brace). But I would like to poll the List: Let me know if (a) you are or would be seriously interested in the piece and, if so, (b) whether it's important to you to have a quick release feature. Absent Suzy's pre-approval, this is the last you'll hear of this on the List; but if you're interested, I'll keep you privately informed of further developments. Do I need to have the fuel filter, tranny oil, and coolant changed? These items have not been touched since August of 1998. I might have to also have the plastic impeller and the thermostat replaced while I am at it. I've heard about "The Ultimate Experience", which should be located on Budd Road of Cupertino, California. It's only a few blocks from where I work. But I cannot find the address or telephone number for it. Does anyone have the number? Have some of you experienced with the shop? If this shop is closed, are there any good ones the area?
