#1. Dyno results after CAI, Sharking and exhaust - from Vern Anderson
Top
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 17:47:01 -0400 From: Vern Anderson <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: Dyno results after CAI, Sharking and exhaust I had a chance to dyno my 98 M3 last night. A few weeks ago I installed Conforti's cold air intake and Shark Injector along with a Flowmaster exhaust from Bob Tunnell. I used the same dyno as I had in November when the drivetrain was stock and we had almost identical weather (temp and humidity). Results were: Stock (11/2000): 204 hp @6000 219 lb-ft @4200 Modified (4/2001): 218 hp @6500 221 lb-ft @4200 So I gained an honest 14 hp at the rear wheels and a few more lb-ft of torque. I'm always pessimistic about engine mods, so I was reasonably pleased with the results. Even more important and pleasing was the shape of the hp and torque curves - the stock curves were always solid, only trailing off a little above 6000 rpms. The new ones are just as solid (but slightly stronger) under 6000, but don't suffer above 6k. The new hp curve flattens out above 6k and holds 217+hp all the way to 7k. The torque curve, although by 6k is already decreasing, holds on better and is much stronger in the 6k range. I ran the car at Mid-Ohio Easter weekend with the PCA (boy does it kill the 944T and RS America guys to point an M3 by!) and I loved the mods in the real track world - the louder engine note was perfect for the track (I can finally hear the engine, making it much easier to match rpms and be smooth on the throttle) and the higher redline was nice for the Backstretch and the Chute if I need to hold 4th or 3rd in traffic. The exhaust weighs exactly 25 lbs less than stock. I'm going to autocross it this weekend at a tiny local event (wonderful and exotic Steubenville Ohio) so I'll have a chance to try it out dodging cones and chasing Vette's. Recaro SRD's are on backorder, but after they arrive I'll add my sub belts and be ready to go for the rest of the year. I'll post pics when I'm finished, sorry for the long message. Vern Anderson 98 M3/2 Coilovers, SA Koni's, adjustable plates, Xbrace, Eibach sways, rear shock mounts, front strut brace, rollbar, Profi II's, floating rotors, PF90's, Super Blue, JC CAI, Sharked, Flowmaster, forged wheels, rolled fenders, trailer hitch, tire trailer and a driver that's much slower than the car......

Hi there, I was faced with the same problem when I installed a 97 M3 diff on my 95 . I swapped the 6 bolt flanges (is that what it's called?!...) for the 4 ones and they fit perfectly and are still going two later... _______________________________________________________ This message was sent through AfriQueMail™. #3. RE: [E36M3] Dreaded Understeer - from Seth Thomas

Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 18:10:38 -0400 From: "Seth Thomas" <porsche993@mindspring.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Dreaded Understeer Here is a good picture of what a stock suspension M3 looks like on the track in a turn. This is at Turn 1 @ Road Atlanta. For those that don't know this is a very fast turn in an M3. I would say between 80-95MPH at is uphill. This photo looks to be right after the apex. Notice how compressed the front left strut is. This turn is not an understeer turn unless you turn in early. That is when it becomes trouble. But I guess what I am thinking about here is how can a stock car with just bars and xbrace be able to lift the front tire in a turn? I just don't see how it can be done. I mean the only E36s that I see lift the inside wheel in a turn is a race E36 LTW with a stiff race suspension and a full rollcage. And it did not lift it that much. Anyone care to chime in on this one? One thing to ask if you are getting understeer is are you sure you are not turning in either too early or maybe even too late? To me it would be more likely early. Seth Thomas www.m3ltw.com www.m3power.com

Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 18:08:23 -0500 From: David Bauer <dbauer@blkbox.com> Subject: Re: Any Advice for a new lister? Welcome Mel, There is a Houston BMWCCA Concours on Sunday if you are interested. http://www.houston-bmwcca.com/calendar.html. If the weather is nice it should be good way to meet some Houston area bimmer enthusiasts (I'll be there). There are lots of mods you can make, I'm in the process of deciding what to do to mine as well. Currently on my list is springs/shocks, lightweight flywheel and short shift kit. I've got a used Jim Conforti intake for sale if you are interested (won't fit on my euro HFM). I'd recommend that and a JC software upgrade for an easy power boost. Hi all, Just joined the list yesterday. I will pick up from my dealer on Friday a 97 M3 Sedan, 5spd in Byzanz (I have done just a little homework, I know the name of the color). A little about me: I am a first time BMW owner. This car replaces my open-track prepared Mustang that I have been building for over 3 years. I am a ten year veteran of the Norcal Shelby Club (with whom I tracked the Mustang). I live in Houston, TX. See more info at http://www.amt.org/mel I was reading info on the unofficialbmw, the MPower, and the unofficial E36 sites yesterday, looking for anything I might want to do to the car soon after I get it. Any ideas? Thanks all, Mel Silva
