It's a PCA school, on the full VIR course, two days for $225. The BMWCCA schools at Summit Point are $260 or $295, depending on the track, so $660 would cover one of each, and have money left over. I *believe* that the PCA school is cheaper because instructors also pay to attend, while the BMWCCA schools providec free track time to the instructors. In the Midwest, the instructors get nothing for free (they pay for Friday track time), but they do get "Instructor Sessions" without students, as compensation. Hence, students get a little less track time at lower cost, but instructors get a better deal (and are more likely to commit to being there-in my opinion). Our 4 points usually come about 4" behind the driver's seat, out of head range, others may vary. Now several opinions - those can be dangerous: -use a stock belt on the street - one strap makes it quick to cut to get you out of a car, + other good features -go with 5 points for track use - 4 points will still let you slip out from underneath the lap belt, despite what antisubmarine features it has. I will use a stock belt in a student's car rather than a 4 point. I am sure there are other opinions out there, these are just mine. Flame on, leaving for a weekend of racing in a couple of minutes so I won't get it anyway! If you want to see a neat short advertising film (directed by John Frankenheimer) depicting a BMW 740i under siege by some jewel thieves, go to: http://www.bmwfilms.com/site_layout/view_film.asp?FilmID=3D1 It's called "The Ambush," and it's the first in a series of dramatic films which do their advertising merely by showing the cars being driven HARD. Enjoy. Joe

I've ended up taking the car to an independent shop close by called, "The Driving Machine" on Bubb Road, Cupertino. Very neat shop. I am having an inspection two done there, since my car has had almost 60k miles. They charge me roughly $6k excluding coolant and brake/clutch fluid, which are over $300. The plastic impeller and thermostat replacement costs me over $500. Now the total bill kicks in for well over $1400!! It really hurts. :o( David >From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> >A local independant might be cheaper? Some of the stuff is easy >enough if you've the tools, space and inclination. #7. Valvetronic Engines - from thomas eby

Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 14:31:37 -0700 From: "thomas eby" <thomaseby@hotmail.com> Subject: Valvetronic Engines I recently read that BMW is producing approximately 60,000 1.6 - 2.0L valvetronic engines in their UK engine facility. For those that don't know, these engines are the ones that use variable valve control instead of throttle butterflies to meter fuel and air. I'm curious to know when BMW plans to introduce this change to 6+ cylinder motors. They claim to be exporting these UK built 4's to Germany, US and South Africa. Anyone know more? I've only read a few published articles on the concept and it's execution --it sounds great though! tom eby 93 m3 74 02 -- _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

A few club members with both E30 and E36 models, including M3s, have changed their front brake setup to an AP 4-piston caliper the comes with a special compound Hawk pad. None of these members have changed their rear brake setup. 2. Steve D. sells the Movit kits and I believe you can purchase the kit for the fronts only. Since these run on Porsche pads, I suspect it's impossible to find a Porsche pad that would fit BMW calipers in the rear. So, in the above cases, the drivers chose to stick with stock BMW brake discs and calipers setup. I have yet to hear of any problems with these setups. We just had a driving school this past weekend and apparently the AP kit worked great. One important note of distinction: mixing and matching TIRES is DEFINITELY NOT recommended!! I've seen the results, they ended in tears. Just my $0.02...
