Bill's great. Ironically, I just had him (and his new back-up mechanic, Vince) do the exact services on my wife's 328i that started this thread : - Inspection II - Change Diff/Tranny Fluid - Replace Water Pump/Thermostat Total cost? About $650. A far cry from the $1500 previously mentioned. I guess the extra cost is in the real estate down in the south bay. ;-) Bill's a truly remarkable mechanic -- as evidenced by his 2001 One Lap racer. He started with an '83 528e. First to go was the engine and diff -- it's now running the engine from a late-80's 325i and the diff from an '88 M3. Then the brakes went -- to be replaced by the calipers from a '98 540i sport and rotors from a 7er. Wow. To top it off, he relocates the batttery to the trunk, rips out the interior to gut all of the sound dampening, then reinstalls the carpeting to make it look stock. He then welded the seats from his '88 M3 directly to the floor to lower the seating position, and lowers the entire steering column to compensate. pretty impressive overall. Now he's got a 2600lb car putting out almost 200hp, and the thing looks like an old-age grocery-getter. The only thing that makes you think this car means business is it's stiff, lowered stance, the wide-track racing Dynamics wheels, and the fact that his license plate says "2001 Lap". Sweet. ;-) -peterg BTW, I also had Bill install an underdrive pulley in the 328i at the same time -- with all the controversy around these things, I figured I'd give it a shot and see how it all worked out. I'll report back on it after a month or so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

Excellent service, and I had planned on buying another, but, alas, it died with zero warning and left me stranded at night. Under the circumstances, I had to settle for the quick solution..a DieHard International Group 48. I would have perfered OEM, but at least I got a 10 pound savings. Moral: you might want to replace your battery before it gets as old as mine...it doesn't die a slow death....

#6. Expensive service in the Bay Area - from Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa

Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 10:31:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa <jbruce@stanford.edu> Subject: Expensive service in the Bay Area Well all this talk about expensive service in the Bay Area hit home today. I took my 95 M3 into Dinan for an oil change ($92 with synthetic) and asked them if they could check the fault codes because I have had the check engine light flash on a couple of times just as i started to come off the throttle to shift. They told me it would be one hour ($100) to check the fault code. I asked why one one hour? He asked me if I had ever tried checking fault codes. I told him that I had worked for the BMW Technology Office and we used to check fault codes all the time in way less than an hour. He then said well if you just want the codes themselves with no interpretation I'll give you that for $50. If you want interpretation thats $100. I could not believe it. My old mechanic in So. Cal would do this for free if you were having some other work done. Dinan used to do it free when I knew the guys that worked the service counter and they knew that I knew Steve. Oh well. So I guess I need to find a new shop. Too bad Bill Arnold is on the other side of the bay. Has anyone ever tried Palo Alto BMW service on Alma? They are really close to my office and I've often wondered if they do decent work. Juan Bruce

#7. brake pads - from Kit Wetzler

Why? That 10% track driving requires 99% of your braking ability. There just isn't a good compromise that is safe on the track, unless you drive slow. In the famous words of a tuner buddy of mine, "Do you want to go fast or do you want to suck?" Either buy Porsche or Stoptech brakes if you don't want to change pads or swap pads... You'll be miserable with track pads on the street and with street pads on the track. -kit 97 m3/4

Bill's great. Yep, Bill is the only one I'll trust to work & inspect my car. It's a bit of a drive for me (especially to get to work in the South Bay), but it's worth it. > Bill's a truly remarkable mechanic -- as evidenced by his > 2001 One Lap > racer. I had the privilege to ride along with Bill for a Group 4 NASA session at Buttonwillow. What was most impressive is how flat the car cornered. And David, you're welcome for all the help. That's why were here. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

Steve D'G at The Ultimate Garage (http://www.ultimategarage.com/) is a good source for most brake components. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - stock pads for the street, PF90s for the track
