I would like to know your reasons for your answer. Reason why I am asking is that my dad wants to start racing ( I think he's 48 years old and tells me that his time is coming so he wants to have fun ). He was about to trade in his Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel 3500 pick-up truck for a 2001 Integra GSR! Of course I was aganist it. Thanks for your input. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 20:20:04 -0700 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Big Brake Upgrade Kits What is the most recommended big brake upgrade kit for the M3? I am looking at Stoptech, Brembo or Porsche. I would like to keep my ABS working at the best level possible **without* spending an extra 1500 on rear brakes. What is the impact of the upgrade on brake pedal feel and travel? Anyone have anything negative to say about Stoptech. They are almost local to me (350 miles) and I would like to give my business to a local shop if possible. Why am I doing this? My next upgrade is going to be the MechTech turbo and I would like to buy more stop before I buy more go. Thanks Bora

While I had some funniness with the ABS, I have yet to hear of anyone else having a similar problem. My reasons for buying the Porsche brakes were: 1. You can buy parts. You can buy parts anywhere. Need pads in an emergency? They're available. Need a rebuild kit? They're available. 2. Engineering. Porsche brakes are engineered to work. On the street. On the track. Some other kits are more race oriented. They may be more powerful with 6 or 8 or 150 pistons :) But many are not as well engineered as the Porsche brakes. AP kits for instance tend to need to be rebuilt fairly often. I suspect that other than pads, a set of Porsche brakes on a street BMW would work trouble free for the normal service life of the car. 3. There is a wide range of pads available. And you don't have to try to explain to Gomer down at Pep Boys what a Stoptech might be. But mostly, it was reason number 2. They're just damn good brakes done right. I treack my car with just the normal street pads and all the instructors rave about my brakes. No reason to go to PF-90s. The car has wonderful street brakes and stops like a John Deer diggin in with a 3-bottom plow. There is no change in pedal feel or action. Unless of course you like doing 0-100-0 in a 1/4 mile. They're there when you need them. Ask Jim El Nabli how he liked his ride in my car. And do not for one minute give up on the idea of the rear brake upgrade. If your finances will allow it, do it. The difference is amazing. Really. I always say its your money. Porsche brakes are what I bought when it was MY money. You will not be disappointed. I have had very good luck with this kit so far (2 track events). No ABS problems to date, but I have a 95. Originally thought I had warped the rotors, but it turned out to just be pad material buildup. I don't know how long they will last before needing rebuild, but there were a couple of reasons I chose this kit: 1) No spacers needed. I run 17X8 BBS RC and a set of 17X8 DP wheels. Neither require the use of spacers. The Porsche kit would. Jim? 2) Quite a bit cheaper than the Porsche kit, which is the other kit I thought about. Although I believe we should never skimp on brakes, if the two kits stop equally good...???? 3) Race pads are a bit cheaper from mail order houses than for the Porsche kit, as are street pads. Disadvantages: You can not go down to the Porsche dealer for parts. Porsche rotors are cross drilled, mine are not. Only Porsche rotors have the holes cast into the rotor. All others will eventually crack. I use slotted rotors. #8. Pinging - from Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa
Top
Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 02:16:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa <jbruce@stanford.edu> Subject: Pinging Hi guys, On Friday I had my M3 at Dinan to do an oil change as well as read fault codes since the check engine light is occasionally flashing on when I lift off the throttle to shift. They pulled non-plausble fault codes 69 and 70 from the computer. When the tech took the car out for a spin he was able to get it to ping starting at around 3-4k. The tech noticed the vanos was making a little noise so he tensioned the chain. That didn't help. He tried swapping out the AFM and that got rid of the ping between 4-5k but it was still present at other RPMs. So $200 worth of diagnosis time later I still don't have an answer as to what is the problem. Monday they are going to continue diagnosis by swapping out the computer and testing the fuel pressure and injectors. The the motor, intake, and chip are completely stock (95 M3) and I always use Chevron premium. However it's still pinging as well as flashing the check engine light occasionally when I lift off the throttle to shift. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any ideas on what could be wrong? Why aren't the knock sensors catching the knock and compensating for it? Juan Bruce '95 M3

I did not see the interior because the car was locked up in the customer delivery bay, and the dealer had just closed. It was gone when I went back to the dealer yesterday to test drive an M5. The M3 was much better looking than in pictures. The M5 was amazing, but a very different car than my 95 M3. I need four doors, so maybe I will look for an M3 sedan.
