However the BFG R1As hate to be run with spacers, they'll tear the wheel out of your hand... (hi donna) The Kumhos with the spacers are no problem at all. -kit 97 m3/4

I don't know about other wheels. On the plus side, the wider track seems to give better turn-in without understeer. I could be imagining it though. ================================================== We had a Big Brake tech session yesterday with 6 Movit customers here and 1 Stoptech customer. I don't know how the Stoptech brakes perform but I do know you'll need at least 25mm spacers with their E36 kit and stock rims. Two of the guys (an E39 540i and an Audi S4) had front and rear kits. Despite what some manufacturers claim, the rear brake upgrade does make a big difference. As many of these guys go to the same driving schools, it should be interesting to see how the different kits compare. #5. Free tires & tire wanted - from Frank, Mike

Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 18:24:06 -0500 From: "Frank, Mike" <mikefrank@lucent.com> Subject: Free tires & tire wanted I have a couple of worn 245/40-17 Pilot Sports if anyone wants them. They are down to the wear bars, but the wear is very even. Thought someone might be interested if they caught a nail or wanted to burn them up at a driver school(s). You pay shipping from Indianapolis. When I caught a nail in the sidewall of one of my rear Pilots a few years ago, a fellow lister (Hi Andrej) helped me out. Just trying to return the favor. Also, looking for a used 235/40-17 Pilot SX MXX3 if anyone has a spare. Doesn't need to be new, but preferably not worn out. Thanks, Mike Frank 97 M3

#6. Kumho Auto-x Tire Sizes - from Ron Katona

Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 20:10:57 -0400 From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> Subject: Kumho Auto-x Tire Sizes Need some advice on Kumho auto-x tire sizes. I'm taking on a co-driver for local events who's footing the bill for tires. This way I can save my Hoosiers for the national events which helps my fixed budget. We've pretty much decided Kumhos would be easier to manage with two drivers due to cost/wear considerations. I'd also like to try them as I've never driven anything but the old R1s and Hoosiers. So what size Kumho fits stock M3 rims? I run 245/40-17 Hoosiers on 17x8 SSR Integrals with 10mm spacers up front and rolled rear fenders, but will probably run the Kumhos on a spare set of Moda M1 17x7.5s. Can I get 255/40s in there? Do these tall tires noticeably kill the gearing for autocross (I'm running 3.15s)?. What about Hoosier road race compounds as an alternative? I regularly get about 50 runs on a set of autocross Hoosiers with the last ten or so being pretty unhappy. I expect the Kumhos to last at least twice as long. Would the road race Hoosiers last as long as Kumhos? Would they be happy on a 7.5" rim? Any other alternatives? We'd like to remain competitive for these local events, but budget is not unlimited. -- Ron Katona

I went to my first autocross in the M3 today, and the hydraulic lifters were noisy, and the car pinged. I added a quart of oil, which cured the lifter noise, but the car still pinged. Also, a friend noticed that the exhaust spit out black smoke during upshifts from 1st to 2nd. Anyone know if this is common? I run the Kumho 245/45s on SSR Integrals and have not noticed any hook-up difference to speak of (I'm running the 3.23). The 255/40s calculate to a 25.03" diameter size, the Hoosier 245/40s calculate to a 24.72" diameter (not a big difference). I do ride somewhat higher with the 245/45s at 25.68", not the right way to go but as you know they don't may a 240/40 :-( Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 22:58:39 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: Want To See A Torn Sway Bar Mount? After returning from an awesome weekend last weekend at Summit Point and the Jefferson Circuit, I discovered that I had torn my passenger side sway bar mount. It was still attached to the car so I removed the sway bar and am now going to have it welded but I took some good digital pictures for the curious ones out there. As a side note, the driver's side one tore a while ago and was welded back onto the car. This could be a hint to those out there who autocross and/or track their cars that preventative maintenance in this area could save you $$$ in the long run.
