#1. odd sound when engine starts up - from Kevin M. Gregg

Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 13:41:04 -0400 From: "Kevin M. Gregg" <kevingregg@home.com> Subject: odd sound when engine starts up Hi- I have a 100% stock 97 M3 coupe. I hear what sounds like a pump or small motor running for about 2 or 3 minutes when I start the engine after the car has been sitting over night. The sound stops and then the car runs fine. What is making this sound? Is it an engine oil pump of some kind? I'm just curious... not concerned about it. I have no reason to think that something is wrong with the car. #2. What do I get for $1400? - from david tow
Top
Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 10:53:00 -0700 From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: What do I get for $1400? I spent $1430 having my 95 serviced in "The Driving Machine". That was Inspection II, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, tranny oil, axle oil and the water pump/thermostat. What do I get for over $1400? Beside noticing the lower engagement of the clutch and slightly smoother tranny shifting feel, I really don't feel that much different at all. To add to the injury, the plastic impeller that was removed from the car looked so damn new that it was tempting to keep it as a spare (no, of course I won't)! The service advisor told me that it's amazing that he could not find any crack on it at all (the car has had 60k miles). Yeah, it's still relatively cheap insurance... I am relatively new to the digest, so please bear with me if this following question had been asked before. My car is a pre 10/95. I have been told that it has softer valve retainers compared to the later cars. A worn valve retainer will obviously result in catastrophic engine failure. It has been therefore recommended to be checked around 50k miles. Well, mine has had 60k miles, and the recent service had not brought up this to my attention. Should I worry about it? Thanks for your help in advance! __ __ David Tow / / / / | / | ______ 95 M3 coupe / / / / |/ | o/______\o Red/gray / / / / | (OO=00=OO) david_tow@hotmail.com / / / /__/|__/|__| []*=XX=*[] _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

It goes off once the temp is high enough...usually less than 1 - 2 minutes. Chester --- "Kevin M. Gregg" <kevingregg@home.com> wrote: > I have a 100% stock 97 M3 coupe. #6. [E36M3] Camber/Suspension Changes? - from twisty M3

Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 12:37:44 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Camber/Suspension Changes? With people always recommending camber plates to go along with various suspension changes, I've gotten a bit curious... How much negative camber is gained (front/back) when the suspension is changed? I realize it'll be different based on exactly what you do, but is there a generally accepted average that occurs based on how low the car goes, and is it equal from side to side? Depending on how much of a change occurs, unless you really want to go to the extremes for track vs. street, it would seem pretty economical to accept the camber change as a good thing (*if* it's not too extreme). Not really looking to make any changes at this point, just curious. Thanks! Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 12:47:44 -0700 From: Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: Time to replace a light bulb? I thought the bulb cost was around $4 when I bought one a month ago. The only reason why I bring this up is the fact that the bulb is made from unobtanium from the 7th moon around Saturn. The high cost of the bulb is barely enough to cover the rocket fuel used to enter orbit in which they use a team of a 100 people to then specially extract rare silica found on the 7th moon but commonly found on earth. From this they mold plastic in a gravity-less facility and ship it to pluto where the assembly takes place. blah blah blah If you are still reading this the overall installation process is a breeze. The OBC slides out by pushing your finger through the access hole below OBC and push forward. It's a breeze after that. steve >do you mean the clock in the OBC panel? if so, the bulb for that is no >more than $2 and it takes less than a minute to change it. the OBC panel >just slides out and the bulbs are accessible from slots on the top of the >panel. save yourself $31 and have the smog check done elsewhere.

#8. e36 with e46 motor/tranny - from Ben C. Tickner

Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 16:18:13 -0700 From: "Ben C. Tickner" <ben@infofusion.com> Subject: e36 with e46 motor/tranny I heard that one of the dealer smurf cars has already been trashed? I must agree that the engine and tranny would make one hell of an E36. I am going to wait for an 8cyl option with smg2 myself but if I have the chance to buy a motor and tranny I would seriously consider it. Maybe suzy will have to start an "e36 M3 -with e46M3 motor/tranny combo" List. :) BTW, I saw a e46 (carbon black) today in Warwick RI. we were both looking very seriously at each others cars when passing. Kind of like a past vs. present, back to the future sort of thing. My girlfriend almost hit me when I said we should stop and say hi. ben- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 11:41:05 -0400 From: nabli@attglobal.net Subject: Re: [E36M3] E46 Spotted Today All this talk about E46 M3s has turned me into Pavlov's pet. No no, not that i want to buy one. I just can't wait for the sea of inexperienced newbies to put those cars to their graves so the opportunists (like myself) can snatch up that engine/tranny combo for their eagerly awaiting E36s! :-) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I went to the near dealer and got the light bulb (the dealer did not even charge me for that because of the minimum cost of it). I installed the light in less than a minute like what you told me! Long live the digest!!! When I lift the oil cap off it has a small amount of yellow goo on it. If I drive the car on a "long" trip (say 20 miles+) the goo is gone and does not return until after a few days of "commuting". Any one have any ideas as to what this might be. Eric
