When you have short trips, you barely get the engine hot enough. So the by product of combustion is heat, water, C02 (and some other nasties....vague generalization). When you start the car, you have blow by and the cold metal causes the steam to condensate. When you run the car long enough, the oil gets hot and the water evaporates away. You ever see the condensation that comes out of the exhaust when you first start 'er up? Chester > My 95 ///M3 with 55K does a daily commute of two 3 mile trips, 5 days a > week. I'm not doubting their mechanical ability, because I've never heard of them. But I got the exact, i mean, EXACT same job done and I paid $660. And I noticed a difference, even at idle. And so I should with new plugs and fuel filter. I'd call them make them aware that you feel that you've been overcharged and then call National Motorists Association or Automotive Maintenance Repair Association to report them. They may not be able to do anything but may have some good advice. Then place a post to every BMW forum you're on and make people like us aware. You sure you didn't get anything else done like a fuel injectors flush? I checked back through my invoices and found warranty work dated 12/97 "cruise control cable clips" , recall #97V-131. Two clips: part # 35-40-1-165-393 and 35-40-1-165-394 called brackets. My production date on the car is 10-01-96. FYI, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

Well, whatever it > is, it was still there on this carbon black M3 as well. Well folks, the latest Lone Star Chapter's autoX was spruced up by a Laguna Seca (Yuk) Blue E46 M3. The owner took delivery of the car 3 weeks before the autoX and put 1800 miles and his car was already past its brake in period. Actually, make that his wife's car! Positive impressions: the car has a great engine. On the start mini-straight where my E36 M3 would just be touching the rev limiter in the 2nd, the E46 M3 was at 4500RPMs in third in a hurry. With its M/Torsen diff the car is able to put the power down way sooner in the turn with minimal power on oversteer. With the traction control off, the car has a largely neutral handling with possibly a bit of understeer. It has more body roll than stock E36 M3 but that does not seam to effect the traction. The seats are great and hold you in place much better than E36 equivalents. Neutral impressions: I don't care for the E46 dashboard and the amount of leather and padding on the car (doors, etc) is excessive IMHO. Negative impressions: LS Blue - 'nuff said. Exhaust: inside the car the exhaust note is low frequency and sounds great. But outside, the E46 M3 sounds like a riced-up Civic. I kid you not - that high frequency metallic sound is very unbecoming of the car and it does not go away after brake in. In summary, E46 M3 is the fastest M3 ever. Given that the later E36 M3s were going for $45+K, the E46 is definitely worth its $52K price tag. Time to start saving pennies for the euro delivery... alex f

I'd hate to replace the O2 sensor for no good reason. The car just passed an emission test a month back. I got a quote of $100 per sensor from Hendricks. Any other suggestions for a source? Chester - these two cars you saw black puffs from, were they the only M3's you were behind? Sounds like "The Driving Machine" has an imbalance, and should be called "The Shakedown Machine"! Are you talking about the clock in the OBC? Stick your finger up into the hole at the top of the sunglass holder. Push on the OBC while you slide a credit card (or driver's license) above the top edge of the sunglass holder (below the OBC) to disengage the locking tabs. Pull out the OBC, remove and replace the lightbulbs, and push the OBC back in until it locks. Then, quickly find another shop to perform future services! -rb >Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 10:29:57 -0700 >From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> >Subject: Time to replace a light bulb? > >I took my car back from "The Driving Machine" after Inspection II and >noticed the clock's light bulb's out on the way home that night.
