If you drive your car long enough to heat up the oil, the moisture evaporates. You're slowly killing your engine with the short trips. -rb >Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 16:45:11 -0400 >From: "Trela, Eric" <eric.trela@cyberlogtech.com> >Subject: Short Trips > > > >My 95 ///M3 with 55K does a daily commute of two 3 mile trips, 5 days a >week. Your oil is never getting up to temperature on those 3 miles commutes. As those of us who have installed oil temp gauges have found, it can take up to 20 minutes for the oil to get even moderately warm. Obviously that happens faster in summer than winter, but even then 10-15 minutes isn't out of line. What kind of oil are you using? Neil 96 M3

My car does not have them. I used: http://e30m3performance.com/installs/installs-1/throttle_clips/clips1.htm as a reference and my car has nothing at all. I'll have to get this fixed huh? Anyone on here installed these themselves? It looks to be a bit difficult to get to with enough of your hand to put a clip on. I'm curious... steve

It took me less than a minute to accomplish the task, however, it took me much longer to get to the nearby dealer for the new bulb. The dealer did not even charge me for the bulb. Yeah, this "The Driving Machine" is worse than the dealer in terms of greediness (even though the quality of work is better). I will steer clear from this place in the future definitely. The only change I've made to the suspension is the addition of Koni's when the stock shocks started going soft (~40k). I think the street ride is better and certainly more controlled on the track. I also think the Koni's are less expensive than stock. I have to admit that "The Driving Machine" has done their work on my car, which ran like the wind even before the service. This place was still cheaper compared to the dealer nearby (Stevens Creek BMW), which would charge me $965 for inspection II, some $300 for coolant, brake/clutch fluid, axle oil and tranny oil, plus $500 something for the water pump and thermostat. So I actually saved myself some $300 to $400 by going to this independent shop. David, --------------------------------- I feel you got ripped off. That was >Inspection II, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, tranny oil, axle oil and the >water pump/thermostat. That sounds high but since it is the Bay Area with 1300 sq ft shacks going for $800k, $1400 may seemed like a bargain! I think if you priced out the parts, you would be surprised how much you actually paid for labor, e.g water pump $100, thermostat $25, tranny oil $10, etc. For Insp 2, I just follow what needs to be done on the service checklist, get all the parts and fluids, incl. tranny and diff fluids (which is recommended every other Insp 2) and have my trusty mechanic do the job. If I recall correctly, it takes him about 1-2 hours labor (including BS and not rushing him) and I end up spending less than a total of $200. Only downside is that he doesn't have a 58" wide screen TV but at least I can bring the drink of my choice ;-) I don't expect the car to feel very different except for a smoother running engine and tranny. After all, Insp 2 is just preventive maintenance. Wen _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
