When they go on the car, what settings does the List recommend for street use only? My M3/4 is a company car and I do some longer trips, so I don't want a harsh ride but definitely want to get rid of the current wallowing. FWIW it has tower braces and X-brace. TIA. Dave Hogg

#3. [E36] M3 Vacuum release noise underhood when shutting off car? - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Guys, I've noticed that my new to me '98 M3 makes a quiet "whoosh" noise from the air intake area (?) about 3-4 seconds after shutting off the car, like a vacuum is being released. You have to have the windows down, or be standing near the hood to hear it. Just curious as to what this noise is, since my '93 325is didn't do this. Maybe it's OBD II specific? Anybody else notice this or know what it does? Thanks! Colin '98 M3/2 (Sharked, X-brace, Euro rotors, R4-S)

I have an e-mail quote of $425 for Inspection 1 and $650 for Inspection 2 from a BMW dealer near me in Balto MD. How much of the $1430 was for labor? What is the hourly labor rate? Dealers here charge around $70/hour. Thanks, Kevin kevingregg@home.com http://members.home.net/kevingregg 1997 BMW M3 Estoril Blue coupe http://members.home.net/kevingregg/m3/ Columbia, MD

#5. E46 M3 Professional Development Guide - from Ben Liaw

Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 08:23:53 -0400 From: "Ben Liaw" <ben@shortshifter.com> Subject: E46 M3 Professional Development Guide got a pretty cool piece of BMW literature that you won't find on the brochure rack at the dealer...an E46 M3 Professional Development Guide. 51 pages of technical information. wow...lots of cool stuff from how they make some of the parts and such as the water pressure made headers to the M5-sized diff. some other cool points: - rear diff ratio is 3.62 - 6-speed nearly identical in gearing to one from Euro 3.2L M3 except for 2nd gear (2.53 vs. 2.51) - when equipped with HID, the headlights are auto levelled ever 25 seconds when they are on. - the "flared" wheel openings are exactly 20mm more than normal. - the "gills" on the side of the fenders sorta work. the left one ventilates the underhood "eletrobox", where the electronic components live. the right one, though open, provides NO necessary ventilation. perhaps a spot for Jim C to put a secondard intake port? ;-) - the last LED on the tach (at 7500) is SUPPOSED to stay on whereas all the others go out when the oil temp warms up. it has a few pages dedicated to comprisions (corvette, jag, MB, 911), but that's boring in my opinion. fwiw. ben

Are you talking about a hiss that only occurs once if it does? If so, I believe it's a cylinder releasing the pressure that might have built up. Since you shut off ignition and the engine stops, there might be cylinders that were on their upstroke to compress fuel/air mixture. This pressure might be high enough to turn the engine a little to release the pressure, no? I think the noise is pretty cool. Drilling out old struts? Replacing just parts? Or does Koni have a complete kit yet? Am I thinking of the double adjustables? Konis, I do know about. The Konis can be had in at least a couple of varieties. The Koni red are the standard fare, need to remove them from the car to set them. The next level up is the sport yellow, they are not cheap but can be adjusted with a knob at the top of the shock. For all-out, dialing in the perfect setup shocks, get the Koni DA's (double adjustable), you may need to call Koni America to get these. They allow you to set both the bounce and the rebound rates independently. I had a worn out set of sport yellows rebuilt and converted to DA's by Koni a few years ago. It was about the same price as buying new sport yellows if I recall. Again, it all comes down to how much do you want to spend. I was going to get them soon anyways, but will be gettitng them sooner than expected. So, Bilstein or Koni's, it is for very hard driven street car. I will do drivers schools this summer. Ride is of a little concern but certainly not much. More than likely I will set it and forget it w/ the Koni's. Also, what is the price difference on these two. Can I get your opinions as well (I have H&R Sport springs). Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 07:55:50 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Centerforce Clutch for M3 now available I will echo Steve's comments that the whole concept of the CenterForce clutch is that it uses weights to improve the clamping force at RPM, so that the spring rate isn't ridiculously high. I used one on my open track Mustang after using the Ford Cobra clutch kit for many years and the pedal effort was much less than clutches with similar or less clamping force. Mel > I'm curious, why do you prefer the Centerforce to either the AA setup, > or, the Sachs sport/HD clutch kit? To add to the thread, my experiences with Centerforce have been very positive. In my import drag racing days, I had a CF clutch in my turbo Civic that ran 12.7 in the 1/4 mile. The clutch never slipped. The CF not only grabbed very nicely, but had a pedal effort almost the same as stock. Granted this is BMW not Honda, but I think Centerforce engineers their products very well. Steve 99 M3

You don't need spacers. Besides, tire-to-strut clearance has a unique self adjusting feature. And I've got the black marks on my struts to prove it! Neil 96 M3
