From what I've gathered, it splices into the wiring harness between the DME/ECU and the engine. It then modifies the sensor inputs going into the DME in order to 'trick' it into changing the spark and fuel output. Considering there are chips and tuners out there (like JimC, ERT, etc.) that can remap the ECU like the factory would do, it seems like a low-tech solution. I took mine out last fall, and it was NASTY. Mildew smell went away shortly after removal ;) best, scott yu PS - to all the track junkies who've helped me out in the past, THANKS! I just got back from New Hampshire International Speedway yesterday, my second track day ever. Other than a bit of heat exhaustion, it was one of the most wonderful experiences I've had. The last two runs I took are still playing over on repeat loop in my brain... dang, now I have to wait until July! There was an E46 M3 on the track. It looked pretty darn good in motion, regardless of being LSB. A few instructors got to take it out, and said it kicked all kinds of boo-tay. I wasn't fortunate enough to get a ride :( > Date: 3 May 2001 11:35:40 CDT > From: Barrett Nicholas < > Subject: hvac mildew smell > > OK, since I'm writing email, might as well hit this one as well. I have the BMW reinforcement plates installed in the shock towers. Will I be able to use the Motorsport front shock tower brace with this set up? I note that the Motorsport brace mounts to the shock tower with accord nuts. Vern sez: <<Has anyone ever heard or have BMW experience with a company called Unichip? >> At a recent Dyno day here in San Diego, I donated my car to have the Unichip system put on it for a demo to the local chapter. They have a piggyback 'black-box' that taps into the ECU. The black-box has a port that they connect to a CPU and tune in on a dyno. Both fuel and timing can be adjusted for any number of RPM points. After tuning, the settings are stored. Buy a new exhaust? Get some new cams? Add a supercharger or a 200-shot of NOS? Then plug back into the CPU and tune again! They were only able to get a couple (5 maybe) RWHP on my 1995 M3 (stock motor). They said that this motor was tuned very well right out of the box (let's hear one for the BMW engineers!). I think forced induction would be the most beneficial application. I don't recall, but it was about $900 or so installed. They were giving me a special deal of $500 if I wanted it, but I passed. Let me know if you've got any other questions. Regards, Patrick Sarne 1995 M3, stock motor, 212rwhp WITHOUT the Unichip. San Diego

#9. Found a cheap BMW shop here - from david tow

Date: Thu, 03 May 2001 14:49:59 -0700 From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: Found a cheap BMW shop here The recent expensive service I paid for got me thinking about looking for a cheaper and good quality shop in my area (Bay Area) where I could take my car in for future repairs and services. I sort of bumped into this station called, "Bosnak Auto Concepts" in Santa Clara off Saratogo Ave. when I was looking for a place to have a smog check (not far from Stevens Creek BMW). The sign I saw on the street had a BMW emblem, which attracted my attention. It's a tiny shop with plenty of parking outside. The shop itself was not that impressive in appearance, but the owner, Nezir Tatlic, was a pleasant enough person with a Russian accent. He told me that he specialized in BMWs, and he used to work for Dinan in Mountain View. To cut the story short, I got a quote from him for Inspection II for $300, which even included coolant, tranny oil, axle oil, etc. that dealers usually charged extra for. His hourly rate was $70. This sounds too good to be true!! What bugs me was that there was no BMW car in his shop. There were only three Japanese cars inside. That's from a person who has had this shop for 2.5 years. Have some of you used this shop before? It's awfully tempting to give it a try. Anyway, if some of you would like to check it out, here's the address and number: Bosnak Auto Concepts 56A North Saratoga Ave. Santa Clara, CA 95051-7301 (408)246-2272 __ __ David Tow / / / / | / | ______ 95 M3 coupe / / / / |/ | o/______\o Red/gray / / / / | (OO=00=OO) david_tow@hotmail.com / / / /__/|__/|__| []*=XX=*[] _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
