Doncha just tune to the station you like and then hold the desired button down until it beeps or momentarily goes quiet and then comes back? If you can't get it, please drive down tomorrow. I set radios for slightly less money than Inspection II services :) Jim "Mount, Mike" wrote: > Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 19:25:15 -0700 > From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> > Subject: radio programming q's?? > > Hey all, I've been trying to re-program my radio button presets and > can't quite figure it out. If you look at the stats for Amsoil & NEO they are both at the top of the heap for protection, etc......I've run NEO products for several years now....They do not have the marketing clout that Redline has, or the "Dealer" network that Amsoil has, but it is a great line of products.... http://www.neosyntheticoil.com/motoroil.htm Your choose ? Steve -------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 20:38:12 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Amsoil vs Redline...again I know that this is the topic of FLAME WARS. However, because I have had personal experience, I will share it. I used to used Redline in my engines exclusively. I had pulled one of them apart after several thousand miles (Detroit iron) and noticed the same sludgy buildup as in regular dinosaur juice. When I retired that particular vehicle and replaced it I used Amsoil exclusively (in both 5w30 and 10w40) and replaced this oil half as often (mostly because I had a 7 qt baffled pan and a 1 qt remote filter and cooler setup so it held a full 2 gallons of oil!). When I pulled this motor apart 2 years ago to change the cam and replace the cylinder heads (this was an open track car that saw some street duty, btw) there was ZERO buildup, varnishes or sludge anywhere in the engine. The cam appeared to be barely broken in after 45K miles. Since then I have moved and the place I used to buy Amsoil is half a continent away. So, I went looking. The only way I could get any Amsoil is to become a dealer. So I did. Anyway, I am real happy with this product and will continue to use it in my M3 as soon as I can figure out how to reset the service light (see follow up post). Just my 2 cents. Anybody want a catalogue? Mel

#5. auto climate control and paint haze - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 09:42:30 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: auto climate control and paint haze Group, Anyone out there have a good handle on how this system thinks. I thought I did, but sometimes wonder???? OK, with the auto off I set the fan speed to a max level I like, press auto and the system controls heat or AC up to this fan level --- no problem. Now, here's where it gets crazy. Say, you're autoxing and you turn off the AC, by pushing FAN button until system turns off. Now, after the run I'm baking and press AUTO button...now I get the lowest fan setting---not where I originally set it! Same thing on the other end, if I push FAN button to a higher setting for more air flow, future times back in the car it blows me away. Is the system not designed for overrides to the original setting for any reason, and it must be reset? Also quick paint question. Late last year got some water trapped under magnetic numbers from a brief run during an autox. Well, it's hard to see but under the right light I can see a "haze" from I guess the water boiling away under the magnetic number from the sunshine. I've tried waxing it out, yesterday I tried Maguier's #1 swirl remover...no change! Anyone run into this and found a solution? Of course for all of you that track and autoxers, I now would suggest removing any magnetic "stickers" on the car after a rain before the sun does its damage, unless there's an easy solution here. I only need about 50% tread remaining or so. If anyone has one laying around in the San Diego - LA area, let me know. Patched is ok, this is for street use, no tracking. I'll give you a few bucks for it. Jim

#7. Fouled plugs - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 09:07:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Fouled plugs Hey guys. I know I should have paid closer attention to the plugs threads...d'oh! Anyway, my dad started his E38 740i yesterday and was greated with a badly shaking engine. Lots of gas smell. He doesn't drive the car too often (I think he has 18k miles after 3.5 years of ownership) and when he does, it's usually for short distances. Believe me, he doesn't beat on the car either...so I doubt he ever visits anything north of 3k rpms on the tach :) Someone suggested that it can be fouled plugs. Would that be it? Is it natural for this to happen given the circumstances (short trips, long periods of non-use, etc)? If I just replace the plugs, will all be fine or is something wrong and will they foul again within a short period of time? The car is under warranty, but I'm not sure if he wants to drive it with the engine vibration. I was thinking of just swapping out the plugs today, but all the dealerships are closed. Can I just go to the local auto parts store and by the Bosch or NGK plugs? I looked at the BMW TIS and it shows the NGK BKR6EQUP (part 12 12 9 071 003) as the long life platinum plugs approved for use in almost every bimmer out there. I guess with plugs like those, there's no such thing as gap? I now just checked the ETK and it shows either Bosch F 7 LDCR (12 12 9 064 617) or the NGK BKR 6 EK (12 12 9 064 619). Of course, my dad's car was made in 1997, so they do show a Bosch F 8 LDCR for 7/97 --> 9/98. So my main question is if I can go to the local Strauss Discount auto center and buy 8 plugs or if I have to go to the dealer. Also, which plug should I use? Thanks, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - buy the things you want at great prices http://auctions.yahoo.com/

Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 11:25:44 -0700 From: Jim Powell <jsp98m3@apexcone.com> Subject: Garage lifts Was: Rocker panel touch-up It is a Snap-on lift I bought on Ebay last year. Mine is the type you see at discount tire etc. It raises the car about 30". More than enough for most things. New ones are about $2500. I'd be willing to sell mine for $1000 so I can move up to a full lift. It's located in North San Diego county and weighs ~1000 pounds. I have an engine lift to pick it up and set it on a trailer etc. if anyone wanted it. Jim ERogers005@aol.com wrote: Jim .. Thanks for the tip, but your lift is what caught my eye. #10. Baby's Got a New Pair of Shoes (or Why Pirelli's Suck) - from Peter Guagenti
Top
Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 11:58:26 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Baby's Got a New Pair of Shoes (or Why Pirelli's Suck) My buddies at my local Wheel Works (the same guys who got me into the Bridgestone Potenza Challenge) mounted and balanced a new set of RE730's on my '95 yesterday. I purchased 4 tires in 245/40-17 and mounted them on a set of 17x8's. Total cost? They matched the tire rack at $141 a piece. I would've loved the S-02's, but at $275 a piece I figured I'd try the little brother first. What can I say, these tires are incredible. Even new they grip amazingly. In comparing these to my last set of rubber -- 235/40-17 Pirelli P-Zero's -- these things are like glue. I could break the Pirelli's loose in third gear with a red-line shift. The Potenza's don't even chirp in second. part of this is probably the bigger rubber, but it can't be all tire width. The Pirelli's did not hold up to any hard driving. One weekend at the track and the D/S tire was down to the wear bars while the P/S still had 3/32's. I knew I was replacing them prior to the next track event, but the death knell finally came when I did an autocross school on them. By the end of the day both front tires were down to the wear bars across the full surface. On top of that, the tires had chunked so bad that all four tires were missing major tread blocks. Ouch. I know a couple of other folks who are running the RE730's and the general consensus is that they don't have the same level of grip as the S-02's at the limit, but they definitely hold their own. I'll be flogging the RE730's at the end of the month at Thunderhill, so I'd be more than happy to let folks know how they feel. -peterg
