#1. Alignment Issues - from Peter Guagenti
Top
Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 12:08:02 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Alignment Issues I'm having alignment issues with my car and I'm hoping this list can help. While getting new tires put on my '95, I decided to let the folks at Wheel Works try to adjust my alignment. After major issues caused by construction around my house, my P/S wheel had gone out and the car was pulling hard to the right. We got the car up on the rack (I love being friendly with mechanics) and we couldn't get the alignment right. The D/S was correct, but even at full negative we couldn't get the P/S to anything beyond 1.7 degrees. Being that the car has camber plates, that's impossible. I start to inspect the suspension to see if something got bent. Everything is straight and true. After scratching our heads for a while we discovered the issue: the Hunter alignment rack we were on wasn't getting an accurate reading from the P/S. We were beyond the laser's ability to read the alignment. We gave up on the rack system, set the D/S front and back (which _was_ reading correctly) and then matched the P/S the old fashioned way -- tape measures and string. ;-) The car feels fine and drives straight now, but I'm not happy with the inaccuracy of how we aligned the car. I was wondering of anyone on the list knows how the race shops deal with alignment that is so outside of normal spec. Is there special equipment? is there a specific method with a regular rack? The shop is gonna call the Hunter rep and see if they can figure out how to use their rack to do it. They promised me a free re-alignment once we both figure out how to accurately read it all. Does anyone on the list know how to do this? Any advice with how to re-align the car is appreciated. Thanks. -peterg

#3. Fix for Nick in Control Arm Boot? - from Geof McLaughlin

Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 20:05:30 -0400 From: Geof McLaughlin <gfmiiilist@usa.net> Subject: Fix for Nick in Control Arm Boot? I just noticed that I have a small nick in one of the rubber boots of the front control arm. If I push on it enough, it does leak grease. Is there any way of repairing this nick to prevent further grease from escaping? Normally I would replace the control arm, but this is a brand new one installed a couple of weeks ago. Any advice is appreciated. Geof

#5. That Damn Door Molding Again! - from david tow

Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 23:26:19 -0700 From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: That Damn Door Molding Again! Hi, all, I had a loose door molding fixed on the left side of my 95 M3 coupe about a month ago. Well, the darn thing popped out again today! I carefully looked at the back side of the molding, and noticed that one of the plastic "lips" that was supposed to grip onto the clip was broken. The "lip" looks so flimsy that I am afraid super glue probably won't fix the problem. Any way of fixing this problem? How much does this piece of molding cost? Surely hate to replace the whole darn thing because of this tiny broken piece... __ __ David Tow / / / / | / | ______ 95 M3 coupe / / / / |/ | o/______\o Red/gray / / / / | (OO=00=OO) david_tow@hotmail.com / / / /__/|__/|__| []*=XX=*[] _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

#6. [OT] In-Car Video and Video-for-the-web production - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Mon, 07 May 2001 01:50:22 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: [OT] In-Car Video and Video-for-the-web production Hi All. I've been playing around with my in-car video setup, trying to come up with a basic procedure that I can use to take hi8 video shot in my car all the way to something downloadable on the web. This is where I'm at right now: movies are at ftp.pumpkininc.com, login anonymously. These are _big_ files, so you modem users will have to pass. They're playable with both Windows Media player and QuickTime 5 (but not QuickTime 4). They look best with QuickTime 5, BTW. I'm interested in usability comments (i.e. does it play on your system? Are the title sharp? How's the color? Zooms OK? Sound OK?), what you like and don't like (it's no-frills right now), etc. I'd like to use your comments to standardize on a content-creation procedure so that all subsequent videos have the same "features." This makes it simpler for me to make the videos, as it's a several-step process. Right now I haven't found a format (that I can create, anyway) that's better than MPEG-1 at roughly 9MB/min. I might be able to do MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 in the future, but for now it's MPEG-1. I tried WMF (56k rate) and it looked awful, so I'm not gonna even post it. The Raw AVI file (Intel Indeo v4.4) are roughly 3x the size of the MPEG-1 files. Streaming Video is a bit beyond me for now. Anyway, all comments and criticisms are appreciated. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

#7. Strut reinforcement plates & KMACs? - from Jeremy Lucas
Top
Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 06:45:59 -0400 From: "Jeremy Lucas" <jlucas@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Strut reinforcement plates & KMACs? Anyone have the 96 & on strut reinforcement plates on their car at the same time as KMACs? When I had my struts off last, on my 95, I placed the reinforcement plate on top of the KMAC and it looked like it would restrict the adjustability of the KMACs, so I didn't install the plates. The reinforcement plate have a down-turned outer edge and an upturned inner edge, and the KMACs hit the down-turned outer edge once you start to position them off center. Anyone with a different experience? If you do have both installed, how much camber are you running? I'm sure they could go on together but I don't know how much it would limit camber adjustment. Thanks, Jeremy Lucas Delaware, OH 95 M3
