I had an unfortunate incident during the recent rainy weeks here in SF -- some redneck in a pickup had small pieces of wood flying out of his truck bed, a piece of which went into my airdam and shattered the mesh grille. Rather than drop the $50 for a new one, I took the grille frame off the bumper (which was easy because all but two of the mounts had cracked off), and cut away the remainder of the slats. I purchased a sheet of wire mesh from pegasus racing and cut a strip to fit behind the frame. I drilled small holes along the edge of the frame, and used my handy-dandy safety wire kit (left over from the days of helping my dad prep his race bikes) to secure the mesh to the frame. Voila! Now I have a fancy-looking wire mesh lower grille that is more effective and cheaper to replace. I could also easily imagine this same mesh sitting behind a regular slatted grille that's been painted black. ;-) Being that most of my mounts had snapped off, I used JB Weld to to secure the frame to the stubs that were once the mounting points, and used some more subtle safety-wiring to secure the frame for high-speed driving. When I went to replace the plastic h2o pump on my '95, I decided to replace some other preventative maintenance items while I was in there, the t-stat housing being one of them. I had heard there was an aluminum one available, but bmp was out of stock. The original 71,000 mile part looked fine. But I just went ahead and replaced it with a new factory plastic housing (p/n 11-53-1-722-531) just to be on the safe side (they are prone to crack when re-installing them after changing the t-stat). Anyways, long story short, if you want to change the part give bmp a call, but it is not nearly the "time bomb" the plastic impeller water pumps are. Peter, I would love to see some pics since this is the path I will most likely follow ("you'll find I'm full of surprises" says Luke to Darth Vader). I would come and see it but I moved from the Bay Area to Texas about 3 years ago. I miss the tracks (Laguna, Thunderhill and Sears Point) most of all. At least I got to drive each of them at least twice. However, I did promise the "Domestic Goddess" that this car was NOT for modification or track duty. I think I can get away with the grill thing while she visits her Mom and Aunts in Canada next month though. Ha! The BMW part is: 11 53 1 722 531 The *paper* gasket is: 11 53 1 740 437 From what I've seen, the metal BMW part is about $35 - $40.
