#1. ASC LIght no more - from dzorine@csc.com

Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 08:03:04 -0400 From: dzorine@csc.com Subject: ASC LIght no more Hello list, When weather is nice I usually drive around with ASC off, but yesterday when I got into the car and pressed the button, the light didn't come on. So hence the question : is it a common failure? I don't think I've heard about this one on the list before. Is it more likely the switch? Then bulb in the dash? The entire ASC system failure? The car is going in tomorrow for last under warrantie repairs (49,500 miles) and I was wondering if this is kind of simple repair I can do myself, rather than entrusting the dealer to take it all apart and screwing something else along the way, as they've done before... FWIW, I stopped in at Russel BMW near Balto MD last night just to check out the place/employees. (I might have my car serviced there). They had one E46 M3 on the floor... an Imola Red/black leather convertible... asking price is $56,000. Sales guy said it was an 8 month wait to get a coupe. >From: Steve <sgrigory@pacbell.net> > >Saw them today in the Fresno, CA BMW dealership... > >A black/black coupe, a LS blue/light grey coupe and a red/black convertible. >All marked up $20k...ouch! #5. Battery advice - from Trela, Eric

Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 09:29:05 -0400 From: "Trela, Eric" <eric.trela@cyberlogtech.com> Subject: Battery advice The last couple of times that I have started my 95 ///M3 after it sits for a day or two it has prompted me to input the radio security code. This morning it seemed like the battery had a tough time turning the engine over and then I had to input the radio code and date /time on the OBDC. It had been sitting for 4 or 5 days. I am assuming the battery is toast and I should replace it ASAP - is this correct? If so what should I replace it with. I have seen some discussion of batteries on the list, but nothing that lists options and the associated pluses and minuses. I don't race or autox, but would like to save some weight if I can. Will I have to trade of reliability or longevity for this? Thanks in advance, Eric ///M3 that I would like to be more cranky in the morning

Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 09:32:07 -0400 From: "Chris Brown" <ChrisB@Drextec.com> Subject: Thermostat Housing Does anyone know the relative merits of using the aftermarket part compared to the BMW E34 part? Does the aftermarket housing retain the o-ring type sealing? Beefier? Come on, there has to be a reason to get it (grin). Chris Brown '95 M3 with blown water pump and I'm not sure what else... -------------------- 10 -------------------- From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <steved3@idt.net> Sounds like the thermostat housing....these run $35-40 with the appropriate gaskets. I keep these in stock...they are an aftermarket part (BMW housing is plastic). SD

While I think the original post was probably about the plastic thermostat housing, Bora brings up another good point. At the Putnam Park school a couple of weeks ago we had a student snap the plastic neck where the radiator top hose attaches. This is a known occurrence as the plastic heat-ages and becomes brittle. It was the first one I'd witnessed though. The permanent fix requires changing out the whole radiator. Although I didn't find it listed on their web site, Performance Radiator at <http://www.performanceradiator.com/> supposedly does have an all aluminum replacement radiator for the E36 for about $250. (Note that the M3 shares its radiator with the 325/328 E36 models.) Any of you guys been there done that? Neil 96 M3

#10. Intermittent Clock backlight - from Mel Silva
Top
Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 10:20:35 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: Intermittent Clock backlight List, I went to play around with some of the functions of the OBC last night and noticed that the clock was not visible. I pressed the "Clock" button on the OBC and it came on for a split second. I gave the area just above the display a good thwack with my finger and it came back on. As I was playing around with the computer it went out a couple of more times, but I could always bring it back with a good thump to the console. Any ideas on a more permanent solution? I guess I could get one of those "drinking birds" to keep thumping the dash... well, maybe not. TIA, Mel
