#1. [E36M3] 20 mm, how much life left? - from twisty M3

While my wheels were off the car yesterday having new rubber strapped on, I did my usual suspension/brake inspection and noted that I have about 20mm of brake pad left (original stockers, apx. 48k miles). Obviously, time and mileage estimates would be worthless as it would completely depend on driving style, etc., but does anyone know a general measurement that I can go by to tell when they're due? I'd rather not wait for the light to come on, but apx. when does that happen (thickness wise)? Thanks! A big thanks to Chester for pointing out my ridiculous measurements... It's been years since I had to deal with metrics. ;) It's actually about 2-3 mm, *NOT* 20 mm. Thanks!!! Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 13:11:34 -0700 From: "andy radin" <fourfa@mindspring.com> Subject: re: staggered LTW wheels It's not a myth. Simple static friction says that the force between two objects is the same with the same contact patch, regardless of shape, true. But this is a dynamic system, and it is affected by the shape of the contact patch. Consider an infinitesimal cube of tire rubber on the tread surface during hard cornering under two conditions: narrow/long patch and wide/short patch. With the wide/short patch, the cube is in contact with the road (and thus being stretched, deformed, stressed, and heated up) for an amount of time corresponding to the length of the patch. Then it comes off the road and spend the rest of the cycle cooling off until it hits the road again. With a narrow/long patch, the cube is deformed for a longer period, and has less of the cycle to cool off before hitting the road again. It heats up more than the wider tire, and eventually heats up so much that the rubber breaks apart, loses grip, and leaves a nice black streak of rubber particles on the road. With the wider, shorter patch, this breakdown occurs at a higher speed. So yes, the contact patch size is the same but the shape makes all the difference. >Also, the better contact patch with wider tires is a myth.

Since the inside pad tends to wear faster than the outside pad on our cars, you might already be on the backing plate on the inside pad. I've heard stories where the backing plate got worn out and the piston came shooting through, causing a complete failure of the brakes. You don't want that to happen. I would replace the pads immediately. Steve 99 M3

He, however, also expressed regret of selling his 95 E36; he missed the sounds and the light weight feel of the old car. Which is why I'm really most curious to see/drive the M-coupe with the new engine. My thought is that it will be much more like the M3 some of us were hoping for. - John S. _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/

#7. tie rod R&R, parts sourcing? - from Scott Yu

Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 14:31:13 -0700 From: "Scott Yu" <scott@ditherdog.com> Subject: tie rod R&R, parts sourcing? Howdy folks, I've been noticing more and more play in my driver's side tie rod. I'm going to need to replace them soon, does anyone know of any writeups on procedure to supplant the bentley? It would be nice to have more info, y'know. Also, does anyone have a really great source for parts like tie rods and door seals? I've got some quotes from PacificBMW but I'm just wondering if there's anything cheaper out there. Also, getting back to that suspension thread we had a while ago - since I'll require an alignment after the tie rod, and since my rear shocks are leaking, and since I just happen to have a set of kmac camber plates lying around, it looks like a new suspension might actually be convenient sooner rather than later. That being the case, I'm going to get either H&R coilovers or Koni coilovers... I just wish I could find someone with the official Koni kit to try out. FWIW, I got quoted $1199 for the Konis and $1699 for the H&Rs at www.shox.com. I can't believe I've talked myself into this... :( take it easy folks, scott yu '97 m3/2 - leaking stock shocks w/85,000 miles and 2 track days boston, ma

My thought is that it will be much more like the M3 some of us were > hoping for. > > - John S. I just drove the M-coupe today. It ROCKS!!! First That motor has a huge amount of midrange, I dont know about the M3s, but this thing goes like stink from 2000 up. But, The car does not have a 8,000 rpm redline like everyone is saying. At 7,500 it starts killing power, say like the computer decided to go from full throttle to 1/4 throttle at 7,500 rpm. So you will lost time shifting at 8 vs shifting at 7,500rpm. Are the M3s the same way? It gives you the illusion that the HP is dropping off big time at 7,500. Transmission felt great, it was a 5 speed. in 5th at 70 seemed very relaxed, I cant remember the rpms but I know they were lower than my 95 M3 at 70. The car still felt like the old M-coupe and roadster. Way too much rear squat under accl. much like the old 280z. If they could just fix that, I would be inline to buy one right now. Did I say how much this thing pulls, any gear, any rpm, it pulls like a V8. If they only could have made the M3 3000lbs, it could probably have been one of the best sports cars of all time. I am willing to bet this motor makes more than the 315 they claim. It felt like 350+. I dont think it was a production car, so it might have something different but I doubt it. at 60-70, there was plenty of passing power by staying in 5th and flooring it. I am willing to bet, this car will smoke the new M3 unless traction limits its 0-60 time. Well other than that, it was the same as the old 240hp car. I did not get to drive it on the twistys, just 10 miles on a 2 lane straight highway. Mike

#9. Brake pad selection help - from Steven Tom

Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 14:35:16 -0700 From: Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> Subject: Brake pad selection help It's almost coming to an end. I've narrowed my choices to either Porterfield R4S or Hawk HP+. Any input on these would be much appreciated. I plan on doing a couple of track days and some autox. Has anyone ever had these at the track? How do they perform? Fade? I've heard from a couple of people that use the R4S and they said that they like them quite a bit. I wouldn't mind any other input. As for the EBC greens. It looks like I was getting a warped feel from residue as well as it was amplified by my pad tracking in my grooved rotors. I noticed this when I would brake lightly at 80 mph I would get heavy shudder. I applied heavy brake pressure and the shudder went away. Thanks to Jim for taking a look at this. steve
