I also have a '97 M3, but the one with 58K miles. I'd say for a couple of years I have a strange occurrence of popping out of 2nd gear. I narrowed it down to popping out of 2nd after an upshift, while turning and on medium to hard throttle. Used to happen once/twice a year initially, but thus far happened twice in 2001. #2. 13/13 rule in BMW club races - from Michael Hill

Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 13:18:34 -0400 From: "Michael Hill" <mhill@cloud9.net> Subject: 13/13 rule in BMW club races I raced my spec racer last weekend in the SCCA Nat'l at NHIS. NER SCCA sold two races to the BMW club and we ran our practice sessions at the same time. I had many close calls with cars turning in on what was clearly my corner. One of the bmw racers speculated it was because of the 13/13 rule and the fact that most of the racers "assumed" no one would turn under them...strange. Mike

Maybe you can see the person in front of you but when a spec racer is behind even a small BMW like 318is, it is very hard to see them. I have seen this happen before when I have ran practice sessions with spec racers and it is really hard to see them in your mirrors. They sit so low and don't have spoiler or anything that is taller than the rear bumper on a BMW. It does not interfere with the passenger's feet and is easily accessible. I recommend buying an extinguisher that has a metal bracket. I believe a metal bracket is required by some track tech inspections. Of course the best choice is a Halon bottle, but dry chemical is acceptable in the 2-1/2 lb. size. Unfortunately you will have to drill a pair of holes in the floor pan. There is some risk of damaging wiring in the sub-floor tray. With BMW CCA Club Racing 13/13 rules, nobody 'owns' a corner -- all drivers are responsible for providing racing room to other drivers. - Rich

#8. Are you getting a horrible clunking noise from the front of your car - from S Lafredo

Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 11:19:24 -0700 (PDT) From: S Lafredo <slafredo@yahoo.com> Subject: Are you getting a horrible clunking noise from the front of your car Group, Thought you might be interested in this information. It might save you a few bucks. In October, after O'Fest 2000 I installed a brand new set of R4S pad on the car. I also did not drive the car for most of Nov and all of Dec and Jan, Feb and Mar. Additionally, 2 weeks ago I installed new bearing and resurfaced rotors on my car. On my drive home after installing the bearings, I started getting this horrible clucking noise from the front end of the car, which has just continued to get worse. I replaced the P/S bearing thinking that was the problem and the noise was still there. Well I just got off the phone w/the BMW dealer's shop foreman and Porterfield. The fellow at Porterfield agreed w/the dealer diagnosis. Which is, the noise is coming from the brake pads. The dealer put on new pads and viola the noise went away. Turns out that my P/S pads are glazed! The fellow at Porterfield said that _some_ people :) drive their cars hard enough that they raise the temperature of the pads to a point where they glaze. He said the only cure was to 1. run track pads ! 2. sand off the glazing Well I think I will try option 2. If the sanding does not work he said to send the pads back so that he can look at them. S Not looking forward to the bill this afternoon :( __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Dry chemical extinguishers work by smothering the fire. Pretty straightforward, a solid covers up the fire. It's like throwing dirt on a grass fire. CO2 works by filling the area of the fire with a non-combustible gas, Carbon Dioxide. It also has a cooling effect on the combustibles. But wind can blow CO2 away. If the combustibles are still hot enough to reignite, you won't accomplish much. Especially with a small extinguisher. Halon is a gas that, in theory leaves enough air for a person to breath while still lowering the oxygen level enough to choke off a fire. This works very well in enclosed buildings. Less well in a car interior with the windows open and probably not worth a damn on the exterior or underhood area of a car unless the supply of Halon is pretty damn large so that the spray can be kept up until the combustibles cool below the ignition point. If survival of YOU is the most important criteria for your purchase, get a dry chemical portable extinguisher backed up with multi-nozzle Halon to prevent fire spread until you can escape or attack the point of combustion with another type of extinguisher like dry chemical or CO2. If you are less concerned with yourself, rely solely on Halon to save the car and maybe your extremities until a corner worker arrives with a proper extinguisher. If you just want to feel good and waste money on something totally useless, get a portable halon extinguisher. It will put out a clothing fire on a stationary (dead or trapped) person but do almost no good at all outside where the Halon will be dissipated by wind or overwhelmed by the volume it would need to displace to extinguish a fire. In other words, Halon is unlikely to save your car if it is burning under the hood. And it sure won't put out a small grass fire. Jim The smoking lamp is out. BG Stop Squeal works on the simple principle of impregnating the brake pad with ingredients that reduce sticking between the pad and rotor. When pressure is applied, the vibrations are significantly reduced, thus brake noise is stopped or is markedly less noticeable. Part No. 860 Anyone every use it? Snake oil? Thanks. Bora, The best solution is the BMW factory fire extinguisher. Mounts right to the drivers seat, mounting holes are already there. Contact Bekkers Imports (www.bekker.com) I have one in my car (thanks Partha!), take 5-10 minutes to install. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4
