#1. 3-Spoke Steering Wheel - Horn Wiring - from Peter Guagenti
Top
Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 10:03:37 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: 3-Spoke Steering Wheel - Horn Wiring I have a question for those of you with electrical know-how. I've almost completed the conversion of a '99 M3 3-spoke steering wheel into my '95 m3. I pulled out the old wheel, installed the new parts, and got everything hooked up again. Everything mates up fine, with the exception of the horn. On the 3-spoke, the horn "switch" is the contact of two elements on the airbag. One element has a brown wire attached to it, the other element is bolted to the steering wheel, which has a blue wire attached to it. The blue and white wire attaches to a harness in the steering column -- a harness that doesn't exist on the '95. On the '95, I can't really figure out how the horn works. There's only one contact point -- a metal ring that makes contact with a metal rod in the column. The metal rod is attached to a brown wire. I'm assuming the brown on both the '95 and '99 is a ground. So I should just be able to splice those two wires together. However, what do I do to complete the circuit? I'm assuming the blue wire is a powered wire, but there is no corresponding wire in the column. I checked the Bentley manual and the wiring diagrams have the horn switch between a Brown wire and a Brown/Red wire, but I can't find the Brown/Red. Any help whatsoever here is appreciated. Even affirmation that my assumptions are correct would be great. I've documented most of the process and will post it all (with pics) to the web when I've got the horn wired up. -p

I think a chipped M3 will redline at 155mph and the engine has enough power to carry that speed. The six speed should be good for 170mph+ but I am not sure if the engine has enough power to carry the car to that speed. I presume with a modified engine making around 300HP you may be able to attain that speed. I could have sworn when I first looked at the demo 95 M3 the dealers got back in 94, they were $34,800 too. But several folks have sent me official BMW pricing guides from then and they all said 35k. DOES ANYONE HAVE A Copy of a window sticker that states $34,800 for a 95 M3, I need it to pursue building a One Lap of America car and would like to be in the under 35k class. thanks again Mike

#5. Fitment of 17" x 8 1/2" SSRs - from Bob Dorchester

Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 19:37:04 -0500 From: Bob Dorchester <rjdorche@concentric.net> Subject: Fitment of 17" x 8 1/2" SSRs Does anyone have experience with fitting 17" x 8 1/2" ET44 wheels with 245/40 Hoosiers front and rear on their M3? More specifically, on a '95 with H&R/Bilstein Sports, -2.7F/-2.1R camber. My 225/45 Hoosiers have corded and I am considering ordering the above setup, which includes SSR Competition wheels. My 8 1/2" Fikse FM5s (37.7 ET) have always presented an outside clearance problem in the rear, even with rolled fender lips. I assume the front will need a 5 mm hubcentric spacer and longer lug bolts and should be OK ( correct me if I'm wrong), but what about the rear? I have seen many reports of 41 ET on the rear with no problems, but what about 44? I have a Supersprint cat-back exhaust that has shown rubber marks in the past. It will probably be time to take a rubber hammer to it. Btw, the sticker on my 4/94 production car was $35,800; I don't remember seeing a lower advertised price, and I was paying close attention after seeing a pre-production model at the Houston Auto Show in early 1994. But I have yet to encounter any potholes comparable to the two I hit in 1996 that bent all four factory wheels and prompted the move to forged. But I don't believe the rim halves are forged. Don't most three-piece wheels use a "spun-aluminum" material? And I don't know that HRE rim halves are stronger (harder/thicker etc) than Forgeline or anyone else's. But HREs are great looking wheels, especially if you like to polish aluminum 3-4 times/year. One thing to note is that I have a 3.46 ring & pinion vs. the standard 3.23 (96+) or 3.15 (95). The car is also Sharked so I have no limiter. In 6th, I saw an indicated 156-157 and it didn't seem like it was going to go any higher. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking at the tach at the time so I don't know what RPM I was turning. On the way back, I tried the same thing in 5th and I saw about 142 and that was at 7000 RPM. Of note about this run is that I had my sunroof and windows open and I got PASSED by a fellow list member at this speed... On a previous trip, I saw an indicated 155 with the 5 speed and 3.23 ring & pinion and didn't think that it would go any faster then either. -Wayne -----Original Message----- From: Bora Akyol [mailto:akyol@akyol.org] Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2001 4:34 PM To: E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] e36 limits Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 13:32:24 -0700 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Re: [E36M3] e36 limits Good question. I am looking for decent wet/dry traction in a longer wearing tire. The last time I bought a set of ZR tires in Houston, the roads around here just ate them up. Almost all the highways here are constructed of concrete, not tarmac, and as you auto crossers know, concrete is significantly more abrasive to tires than tarmac. My dealer sold me the car with barely enough tread depth to pass inspections, and I'm almost certain that the Michelins that are on the car are the original tires based on the age cracks on the inside sidewalls. So, I need to start shoppin fer tyres. Any input is valuable. TIA, Mel

At that point the RPM was at 6500-6600 (can't remember exactly). So I assume if I had more straight road left, I could have hit the 155 mph mark that Wayne is talking about (maybe more?). This was with the windows up and sunroof closed. I was on my way to Santiago from Santo Domingo (I'm in the Dominican Republic). Next time I go to Santiago, I will try again and let you guys know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2001 10:04 PM Subject: RE: [E36M3] e36 limits > Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 21:58:32 -0400 > From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> > Subject: RE: [E36M3] e36 limits > > On a recent adventure on the way to Summit Point, I tried out the upper > limits of my car in both 5th and 6th.
