To those in the Seattle area, Stopped by this place last week called Strictly BMW, while on a business trip to the Seattle area. I was interested in some Dinan parts. Small place, looked like a real speed racer type shop, and the guy I talked to (Derek) would even give me a CCA discount (though only to $35.00), but hey, at least it's something. Anyone know if these guys are OK to do business with? TIA, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

#5. M3 for sale >> southern cars?? - from Mount, Mike

Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 18:45:41 -0700 From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> Subject: M3 for sale >> southern cars?? Gruppe, I've noticed several postings lately of M3's listed for sale and described as a 'southern car.' I'm from the south also, (but now live in lala land here in Ca.) and so being an ex-patriate I've wanted to know what I'm missing (besides from the relaxed lifestyle, chiggers, sweetened ice tea, mosquitos, pecan pie, ungodly heat and humidity, etc). So why is a southen car different? Does it have a built-in gun rack? Hooks on the bumpers so you can tie a buck off? Did they come with 8-track tape decks? NRA membership? I just don't get it. #8. RE: [E36M3] Gauge Hookup Help - from Wayne Miller
Top
Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 22:05:12 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Gauge Hookup Help I installed my Eastern Motorwerks gauge kit 2 weeks ago and had no trouble installing the ODB and that was without instructions for it (I forgot to bring them home). The installation took me 6 hours (they estimate 4-6 hours) but I had to fix a couple of other problems at the same time so 4-5 hours working alone seems about right. One thing that I did find is that logic says that the most important gauge should be on the left and the least important on the right. I found that, while driving with my hands on the 10 and 2 positions, my right arm blocked my view of the left-most gauge (the oil pressure) so I swapped the oil pressure and voltage gauge locations. You may want to test this before putting everything together and putting the sender wire clip in the socket (you will understand when the time comes). The gauge kit is very nice and I am quite pleased with it and highly recommend it ( www.easternmotorwerks.com ) . The whole package really looks cool at night with the lights on. #9. RE: [E36M3] Sockets in the Exhaust - from Mount, Mike

Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 19:10:38 -0700 From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Sockets in the Exhaust Roger and Gruppe, this clearly shows that exhaust systems, in fact any engine system, is a compromise. Motorcycle mfr's deal with this issue several ways; Yamaha has their EXUP valve, Honda has one, Suzuki etc. The Yamaha system monitors rpm and through a titanium valve system restricts exhaust flow. The result is optimized midrange torque as well as no loss at the high end. Roger brings up a good point when he asks about midrange suffering from an exhaust system change. Bob Tunnell commented on this when he said that no other exhaust system on the market improved on the original midrange torque offered by the OEM (see his website http://www.tunnellracing.com). All other makers gave more hp at the top end, but midrange torque suffered. IIRC, Nissan uses a similar system in their exhausts for the Maxima, a port opens up only at higher rpms and lets gases exit through both exhaust pipes. There is a good book on why this works; "Scientific Design and Intake and Exhaust Systems". Seemed as though the dyno operator knew this would happen. Does AA/Supersprint/UUC offer a welded-in socket as an upgrade option? Makes you wonder what happens when the exhaust is "opened up"...does midrange suffer? The few published dyno curves seem to indicate that this does NOT happen, but it does make you wonder what is going on...... #10. extending life of PF90 pads - from Don Chaney
Top
Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 21:30:31 -0500 From: "Don Chaney" <chaneydon@hotmail.com> Subject: extending life of PF90 pads I used the PF90 for the first time at Road America and was very impressed. Although I had used them for about 200 miles on the street, they shuddered badly during my first track session. I guess I had not really gotten into them on the street; however, after some hard stops on the track they worked great. Terrific stopping power and no fading at all. I still have a fair amount of pad left, but the inside pad has worn noticably more than the outside. Since the PF90s dont have clips I was wondering if anyone has switched the inside and outside pad to get more wear out of them. If so, what was the result? I called Porterfield and they are sold out of PF90s, which have been discontinued. They are now recommending the PF97--anyone used these? Different? Better?
