#2. Squeaking Left Rear - from Rob Jackowitz

Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 11:47:23 -0400 From: "Rob Jackowitz" <rjme@msn.com> Subject: Squeaking Left Rear Howdy folks, It's been a while since I last followed the E36M3 list..ya know - responsibilities. I've been following again for the past few days. Hope all you M-drivers are doing well. I see that Chester not only made it to a track event (finally) but is still here to tell about it (bravo!). Anyway, I'm experiencing a rather serious squeak from the left rear of my '97, most noticeable at low speed over small bumps. Rear shock mounts (stock) are new and swapping in my JTD mounts didn't change things. I've also swapped the rear shocks (left/right)in order to see if the squeak would move to the other side...it didn't. Car drives great with the exception of the squeak, so I don't think its rear sub-frame, as I would assume that I would "feel" that. Any ideas would be appreciated. #3. M3 vs. Non M3 E36... - from Luis Veras

You are flying around the road, and you see a nice E36 with all M3 accessories (bumpers, side skirts, side markers, rearview mirrors, rear badge, etc.), but you're not immediately sure it is an M3 or simply a 328 with all M3 accessories... what's the quickest way to know if it's not an M3? (bear in mind that you are on the street, so you don't have time to look at the car in detail). I thought that by looking at the seats I could tell if it was not an M3, but then I was told that M3s also come with the normal seats that other E36 come in, is this true?

Thats the first thing i check, most of the time that will reveal the faker. If the car is an M badged 318, look for 1 exhaust tip instead of 2.

But here's a few things: - M stripes on the leather seats - Red tach needle (non M cars have white needles, I believe) Those are probably the hardest to change for a visual inspection. Door sills, badges, wheels, exhaust, moulding trim, etc are pretty easy to change. They were only going for "effect". So the lack of negative camber is really obvious. On that note, a neighbor just bought a z3 3.0 and it has a bunch of M accessories in it. steering wheel has the m color weave and badge. shifter. seats and I think the door sills. whats the deal with that? Can you order the "M look" package for any car now? I can just see it, "Are you a poseur but too lazy to actually change out the stuff yourself? We'd be happy to do it for you. Just check the poseur option when you order your car". #9. Alpine Multimedia Head Unit (IVA-C800) - from GluAll@aol.com

Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 12:50:00 EDT From: GluAll@aol.com Subject: Alpine Multimedia Head Unit (IVA-C800) Anyone install one of these in their car? I just purchased one and want to try to hook up the DVD player and head unit myself to save money and to learn something about car audio. The IVA C800 comes with the head unit which of course is easy to put in, i already have a prewired harness from my previous head unit install, the problem comes in with the brain for the head unit whose dimentions are about 12 inches by 8 inches by 1.5 inches. Where is this usually mounted? How much of the dash must be removed? and is it difficult to do so?

All of the ///M-goodies can be added. Even BMW offered am M-technik 3-series which included all of the M3 aero stuff. The darth vader seats were only offered in the 2 door, although I think you could opt for the standard sport seats as well. Another giveaway might be worn-out rear tires :) Rob >Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 12:04:05 -0400 >From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> >Subject: M3 vs. Non M3 E36... > >You are flying around the road, and you see a nice E36 with all M3 >accessories (bumpers, side skirts, side markers, rearview mirrors, rear >badge, etc.), but you're not immediately sure it is an M3 or simply a 328 >with all M3 accessories... what's the quickest way to know if it's not an >M3?
