Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 23:21:45 -0400 From: "Dave Spragg" <dspragg@mediaone.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Toyo RA1 - what pressure? I worked with Dave Taylor of Toyo on these. The operating temp ranges are all fine and well but you will only get that on about 3 inches of the front tires on a stock M3, depending on the severity and frequency of the turns on the track. I ran them everyplace from 36 - 48 hot and settled on what gave me the best lap times and feel. Without camber and with the high side walls these things were hugely down on top corner speeds compared to my V700 and R1 tires. The R1s were the fastest for me and I liked them the most too but they wore out much faster than the V700s and the Toyo RA1s lasted even longer than those. Everything is a tradeoff and the Toyo RA1 trades durability for grip... overall I think they are cool as hell and are much more fun with camber like my Group-N suspended 330is. :) They also drift, slide, and howl like street tires with complete and utter confidence. When they start to go you have time to explain to a student what is happening and THEN correct... sweet. Try that with an R1 or even a Kumho and have a fun ride into points unknown. By the way, Dave Taylor at Toyo is a great guy and a real Bimmer enthusiast. #3. Selling a 98 M3/4 w/ track goodies (CA) - from John Robison
Top
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 20:52:14 -0700 From: John Robison <johnr@yahoo-inc.com> Subject: Selling a 98 M3/4 w/ track goodies (CA) Group, I'm considering selling my 98 M3/4 soon, and was kinda curious about a few things... I've done at least $10K+ in "track upgrades", ranging from full coilover suspension to sharking, bracing, and Porsche Brakes on all 4 corners. Its unclear to me if the car is worth more in this condition, or worth more if I pull all the stuff out (I saved orig parts). I'm not really looking forward to spending the next year unloading random upgrade parts. I'm also not looking forward to pulling out all my goodies! ;-) If I sold it as an "almost track" car (basically all it needs is a rollbar and seats/harnesses), people might worry cause (gasp) I "tracked" it. It has 25K miles, but even so, apparently tracking is considered a really bad thing. I don't race, but I do my fair share of "open track" events. If you consider every track mile is 3 regular miles, its probably got closer to "35K" miles. (The other mileage added by my daily commute.) Personally, I'd pay a "standard" price for a car that was already set up for the track (but I probably wouldn't pay a premium, knowing its had its share of being driven hard.) Seems to me the "standard" price of E36 M3s is around $30K. (I'm located in Northern California) Clearly, I'm not thinking about pulling everything and pretending it was never tracked. I'm not sure if the current used M3 buyers out there would end up adding all the stuff anyway, or if they would rather have a "stock" (soft riding) M3. At this point I'm thinking of trying to sell it as a track car, and if noone is interested, revert it to stock and have a fire sale on all the parts... Thoughts? Clearly this is a decision many on the list (w/ upgrades) will face sooner or later... Thanks, JohnR (98 M3/4 w/ tons O stuff)

DUH! I was able to drive the car home, but it was definitely running on less than all six cylinders, and wouldn't idle at all. What's the best procedure at this point? Scott 96 M3/2 crippled....

At this point, it sounds like 1 or more valves are bent. If left to run this way, eventually the valves will break, possibly causing piston damage or maybe even a holed block. #8. M3 vs. Non M3 E36 - from Patrick Sarne
Top
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 07:36:28 -0700 From: Patrick Sarne <patrick.sarne@hoylecapital.com> Subject: M3 vs. Non M3 E36 Wait a minute... Near the end of the E36 life (non-M), didn't BMW put the M-aero package on most, if not all, of the E36 coupes? I think model year 1999. By that time, the E46 sedan was out and the only coupe available was the E36 (yes, I believe they overlapped the body-styles). I've seen a couple, and they have, IIRC, front, side and rear pieces (no lip on the front) and the badge on the doors (but they say ///M, not ///M3). I don't recall if they had M3 mirrors, but I doubt it. Although it's possible to change the mirrors to 'fake' your car into an M3, I think that is the quickest way to tell a perpetrator from the real deal. BTW, I don't remember who was asking, but the M cars do indeed have red needles in the dash as opposed to white for non-M cars. #9. [E36M3] Size vs. Shape - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 08:18:20 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Size vs. Shape No, not an exercise related comment... Tires. I actually found someone with some spare 8.5" Contours who's willing to trade for my 7.5s. I noticed that the 235s on the 7.5s up front are pretty close to the strut housing. The tires are too big for the wheel, so they "bulge" out a bit. The 235s on the 8.5s are "stretched" out. Is it safe to say that the tire dimensions themselves are actually the same and, because of this, the 8.5s with 235s should fit okay? I know people that run 235s and 245s up front without problems, but I have camber shims which tilt the wheel ever-so-slightly closer to the strut (as opposed to how camber plates would work). Eventually, I'll end up with camber plates with whatever setup I go with, but for now... I know the easiest answer would come from me jacking up the car and swapping my own wheels around, and that's what I'll end up doing, I'm sure, but asking is much easier in the meantime. Especially if anyone with camber shims has some experience in this matter. Anyone? Thanks!
